FAST AND THREAT
TO QUIT TALKINK
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 11. P)
The hunger strike of 34 alleged com
munists held In the city prison on
vagrancy charges, was called off In
its eighth day today a few hours after
they had also gone on a "silence
strike."
The 24 accepted broth after James
Wilson of the International Labor de
fense had told them their strike "had
proved conclusively they could not
obtain Justice in the lower courts, es
pecially from judges like Municipal
Judge George J. fiteiger "
Three hours after they consumed
the broth the strikers will eat mush
and three hours after that they will
have poached eggs on toast, all at
their own expense. Tomorrow they
will return to prison diet.
The "silence strike" greeted Jailors
and Dr. A. A. O'Neill, city prison
physician, this morning. They refused
to answer greetings or tell how they
felt. The refusal to talk was blamed
on Dr. O'Neill, who they hold respon
sible for the srrcst of their doctor,
Dr. Franklin Blssell, of Berkeley. Dr.
Blssell was taken Into custody when
he visited the Jail, on a charge of
violating the medical practices act.
Dr. Blssell appeared before Judge Stel
ger and talked himself bock Into Jail.
Assistant District Attorney Harmon
Sklllen told the Judge he believed the
fact that Dr. Blssell was not register
ed to practice in San Francisco, was
more than anything a technical vio
lation of the law. He indicated the
district attorney's office would be
satisfied with a dismissal.
Dr. Blssell, however, started an ora
tion on the prison, "the system," the
police and bis treatment and only
halted when Judge Stelger threaten'
ed him with a contempt of court
charge. He then pleaded "not guilty1
and demanded a Jury trial. This was
granted and he returned to Jail in
lieu of 1 1,000 bail.
STOLE NO MONEY
LYNCHBURG, Va.. Aug. 11. (T)
All except a dozen of the 49 members
of Lynchburg's police force today had
signed an oath in treating God to
strike them down if they lied about
stealing 1.500 of automobile lioense
fees last May la.
For various reasons these twelve of
ficers and patrolmen declined to sign
the oath which was devised by City
Manager Hart and Major J. O. McGov-
ern, a retired army officer, and mem
ber of the Plnkerton Detective agency
Two more on vacations, two were 111
and several said they had already
been questioned under oath and hence
there was no reason to sign it.
Hart disregarded criticism of the
oath. He said the move was psychol
oglcal and may bring results eventual
ly, If not at present.
Theft of the money right under
the noses of police was regarded as
the "perfect crime."

'ANGLE OF SLICE'
BAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 11. (AP)
The next time you slice a golf ball
consider before you curse.
If your slice Is bad enough It may
be good enough to save you from a
lawsuit.
Superior Judge Edmund P. Morgan
ruled a golfer must give warning to
anyone standing more or less directly
in front of him, but if his ball strikes
someone more than 33 degrees off the
line from tee to Intended green,
then the victim "has assumed a risk
of Injury" that places him beyond
the comfort of the courts.
Archibald J. Treat, San Francisco
attorney, brought suit for iSO.OOO
against Taylor Merriman, East Bay
golfer for injuries suffered when he
was struck by a golf ball on the Mill
Valley Golf club course. It seems
Treat was putting on the third green
as Merriman drove from the fourth
tee. Merriman's ball sliced sharply
and struck Treat on the head, frac
turing his skull.
Ruled Judge Morgan:
"Apparently there is no court prec
edent Involving the duties of one
golfer to another, but as nearly as I
can find out, if a player is stand
ing within an angle of 33 degrees
of the Intended flight of another
player's ball, warning must be given.
If a player Is struck while standing
beyond that range he has assumed
a risk of injury and cannot recover
damages."
Trent advised the court he will
draw up a new complaint after as
certaining the angle of Merriman's
slice.

AOTORIA, Ore., Aug. 11. A

ermen was at least temporarily avert
ed tonight when packers announced

ent rate of six cents a pound for fish

nounced the price would be cut to
four cents effective tonight. In their

secretary, said tonight the men would
continue to fish as long as the pack-
era paid six cents. The strike had or
iginally been called to be effective
co incidentally with the price reduc
tlon.
Reports from the Columbia rlw
today Indicated the usual heavy Au
gust run of low-grade fish had' n-
tered.

DIFFERENT CURE
WASHINGTON CROSSINO, N. J.,
Aug. U. JF Henry A. Wallace, sec
retAry of agriculture, told 2.000 New
Jersey farmers here today that If the
republicans rcsaln control of the na
tional government they'll have to use
the same methods as the democrats to
bring back farm prosperity.
"Unless the republicans worked with
the farmers in keeping down surplus
es," Wallace asserted, "they would
have to build up for another explos
ion by resuming heavy loans to Eu-!
rope, or they would have to lower tar-,
Ufa much more rapidly than we are
doing both of which would be dam-i
aging in the long run to the United
States."
He reiterated denials that the crop
reduction programs this year had been
destructive to the nation's well-being
In view of the western droughts,
pointing out the corn-hog program
had made available 100,000,000 bush
els of corn which otherwise would not
have existed. Twelve million acres of
land were withdrawn from corn pro
duction, he said, but that was more
than offset by the killing of hogs
which would have consumed 300,000,-
000 bushels.
