prices of the four basic American
agricultural commodities, produced
this year under a government spon
sored program designed to benefit
farmers, averaged today at Chicago 21
per cent higher than a year ago and
83 per cent higher than two years
ago.
The steady and sometimes sharp
Improvement In domestic grain prices
since May has accounted for the bulk
of the percentage increases. The quo
tations, however, still are far below
the all-time peaks which belong to
the war and post-war era.
Prices at Chicago of wheat, corn,
hogs and cotton, defined as the basic
commodities by the agricultural ad
Juatment act, showed today the
greatest Improvement over quota
tions for a corresponding date in
1932 recorded so far this year.
Wheat prices are approximately 93
per cent higher than two years ago
while only 6 per cent higher than a
year ago. September delivery of
wheat on the board of trade closed
at (1.04-,, near the season's peak
in June, and 50 cents better than on
Aug. 6, 1932.

An average attendance of 95 boys
and girls are taking advantage every
Monday and Thursday afternoon of
the SERA swimming classes held at
Merrick's, Miss Golds Boone, recrea
tional program supervisor, states. At
tendance of the adult classes held In
the evening has been Increased to 35.
Miss Marjorle Goff, In charge of
the classes, which Include beginners
from 1 to 2. swimmers from 3 to 3.
And life-savers from 3 to 4 p. m., has
awarded beglnneis buttons to 10
children who have passed the Red
Cross testa. A swimmers' test is to
be held Thursday, August 9. Great
enthusiasm Is being shown In tht
work and it is planned by the Red
Cross corps, which Is assisting In the
Instruction, to present a water pag
eant at the close of the course. Chil
dren who wish to enter are instructed
to bring a parent to the pool, and
must pay a fee of 10 cents as wU
as furnish their own suits and towels,
Baseball, another feature of the
SERA recreational program, Is being
carried on under the present direction
of Victor Eakln, coach of the Amer
ican Legion second league. Last
Thursday a practice game was held at
Ashland with the Ashland second
.eague, in which the local team came
out with a wide margin In their favor.
Twenty boys made the trip, and all
played. Walter Durham is coaching
the Ll this. City nine, which as yet
Is more inexperienced than Eakln's
squad. A return game Is scheduled
for next Friday at 2 p. m., at the
Jackson school diamond.
Plans are being made at the city
