Carpenters Feted at
Brommer Home For
Golden Anniversary
Mr. and Mra. P. 8. Carpenter of
Perrydsle wera delightfully entertain
idltl covered dish supper on the
lawn at the home of Mr. and Mra.
Carl Brommer, 821 Minnesota avenuo.
The occasion was In celebration of
their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mra. Carpenter have been
residents of Medford since 1011 and
the thirty friends who gathered to
congratulate them on this occasion
were those who had known and been
associated with them during most of
these years.
Wslter Frazer Brown read a poem
of his own composition written In
honor of the occasion and glfta were
presented to the bride and groom by
the assembly. Each related wedding
day experiences, and Mr. and Mrs.
Carpenters" long wedded life and ex
emplary home life were eulogized by
those of the guests who have known
them most Intimately.
When the guests departed, each left
with Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter their
wishes for many more years of use
fulness and happiness.
Eight Couples Enjoy
Supper Friday Eve
In Phythian Garden
Friday evening at the home of Mlaa
Phyllss Phythian on Minnesota atroet
eight couples of the younger set
were entertained with a formal sup
per dance. The evening was spent
In the lovely gardens of the Phythian
home.
Miss Jean Rankin of Poitland, who
la house guest of Miss Margarita
Boyle, was honor guest for the eve
ning. Supper was served at 7:30 on the
lawn, and the guests picked out com
fortable nooks to enjoy the dainty
sandwiches, salads and Iced tea. Al
though cool, the evening was most
enjoyable. After supper the group
waa entertained with dancing on the
paved drive at the rear of the home.
Refreshments of Ice cream and
dainty cakes were sorved at 10
o'clock, also In the gardens, after'
which more dancing and a social
good time was enjoyed until a late
hour.

Thompson presides
At Red Cross Meet
The annunl meeting of the Jack
son county branch of the American
Red Cross was held on Friday. Jl!y
a7 at Hotel Mctiford, and was lnrgely
attended. Mr. J. C. Thompson, chair
man, presided, and after giving a
resume of the work of the society
during the past year, cslled on var
ious members for remarks.
Interesting talks were given by Mr,
and Mrs. Alfred 8. V. Carpenter, MIjs
Ulllan lioherts. Judge Day, Mr.
milium, and Mr. Thorndyke.
Many of the apeakers voiced ap
preciation of the excellent work of
Miss Lillian Roberts, whose tireless
energy, combined with a compre
hensive knowledge of county relief
problems, has done much to simplify
this work.
Dr. Drummond spoke of the flhe
work In first aid carried on under
the chairmanship of Beth Rullls. and
Mated that this work will be In
creased and broadened during the
coming year.
Mr. Thompson, who " nn a
most efficient chairman the past
three years, waa unable 'to accept
he office this year, and Oeo T. Frey
was elecled chairman.

To Fifteen in Eighth
Birthday Celebration
Little Miss Joan Cox was hostess
to a party celebratlni? her eighth
birthday anniversary at her home on
Columbus avenue Mondny afternoon,
July 30.
After an afternoon of games and
entertainment as well aa having pic
tures taken, the little group of chil
dren assembled around a colorful and
cleverly decorated table with a beau
tiful birthday cake as centerpiece. Ice
cream and punch also were served.
The decorations were carried out In
pink, green and white.

Mr. Kellogg formerly lived In Med
ford. and has visited her occasion
ally since moving south. During his
laat visit In 1030. he gave an organ
concert at the First Methcdlst
church, with his brother Harry, as
tenor soloist. At present Mr. Kellogg
la organist of the First Congregational
church of Los Angeles.
Mr. Cartwrlght. who Is making his
first visit to MediWd. is a cellolst
In the symphony orchestra.

at luncheon Thursday in honor of
her house guest. Miss Peggy Hamill,

land, Ohio, and Miss Elizabeth Egan
of fit. Louis, Missouri, who left Fri
day for the east after being guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Carpenter at

where they have attended a confer
ence and camp meeting of the Free
Methodist church.
Rev. Long has been returned for
another year to the local district and
Is now entering his fourth year as
pastor here. He will be welcomed by
many old friends and will form many
new onea with his continued serv

A no-host supper party was given
at the home of Dr. and Mrs. R. C.
Mulholland. on Berkeley way, Thurs
day evening, after rainy weather
made necessary a change In plans.
The event was to have been a swim
ming party but all agreed that it

day afternoon at the home of Wllmo

preceded by a covered dish luncheon.

At the close of the lodge session ,
a surprise miscellaneous shower was
given by the Pocahontas lodge, to
sister Harriet Watson, whose home
was recently lost by fire. She was the
recipient of many lovety gifts.

Miss Leneve Bimklns returned from
Corvallls the first of the week to
accept a pnnitlon at Crater lake for
the rest of the summer. Miss Sim
kins had been employed at the Infor
mation desk of the Memorial Union
building In Corvallls for several
months.

spent Sunday visiting with her par
ents. Dr. and Mrs. C. R. Slmklns of
this city, leaving Monday for the
psrk, where she will remain with her
position at the lodge for the rest of
the summer.

Honors Rev. Knotts
The president of the First Meth
odist Aid society was hostess at a
covered dish dinner Friday evening
at the church dining hall, honoring
kcv. and Mrs. Joseph Knotts and
family, retiring officera and newly-
elected officera.
Mrs. F. M. Corllea was chairman
for the enjoyable event. After din
ner, Mrs. Ployhart. president, favored
the group with two beautiful vocal
selections, accompanied by Mrs. Earl
wymore at the piano.
A. W. Pipes extended a cordial wel
come to Rev. Knotts and family on
their being returned to the Medford ;
church by the general conference at
Portland lost month. Mr. Pipes em
phasized that Rev. Knotts, being a
very capable leoder, has outlined a
very fine program when systemati
cally and loyally developed by vari
ous departments of the church.
Rev. Knotts responded to the splen-
did welcome in his usually kindly and
gracious manner and Mrs. Knotts and
son. Ross, Joined in expressing their
thanks and appreciation for the
splendid co-operation they have re
ceived in church activities.
Mrs. Kunzman, In behalf of the
Ladles' Aid, presented to the retiring
president a gorgeous bouquet of choice
gladioli from the Olin Arnspiger gar
dens. She extended her best wishes
to Mrs. W. W. Walker, the new presi
dent, and the evening came to a
close with singing "Blest Be the Tie."

Miss Irva Fewell or the Mall Trib

tion In San Francisco, after having
visited Portland and traveling south
by airplane. Miss Fewell will remain
In the south until next Wednesday.
Leaving Medford Tuesday evening
on the Oregontan, she spent two
days In Portland and took the Unit
ed Airlines Boehlng transport ahlp
for the southern trip Thursday night,
stopping briefly at the Medford air
port on the 6fi0-mlle flight to San
Francisco.
She had not decided upon leaving
this city whether or not she would
make the return trip by air.

Leaves for Berkeley
Mrs. Warner Patton left Ftida-y
morning to make her home In Berke
ley for the winter. She was accom
panied south by her daughter. Miss
Helen. Miss Doris, also the daugh
ter of Mrs. Patton, will remain In
Medford as the guest of Miss Molly
Brown at the home of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Brown, Siskiyou
Heights, during the rest of the sum
mer and will leave, to attend Mills
college this fall.

Mrs. H, E. Kem was hostess Thurs
day at " lovely bridge luncheon given
at her home on West Main. After
the luncheon was served at 1 o'clock
the guests enjoyed contract during
the afternoon.
Rev. Balrd and Family
Return From Yellowstone
Rev. W. R. Balrd and family and
Mrs. Bertha Tim merman returned
late Wednesday night from a ten
days' trip , to Yellowstone national
park. They returned by way of Salt
Lake City, where they spent two days
visiting.
Miss Hayes Leaves
for San Francisco
Mrs. Vella Hayes, manager of Med
ford'a Cinderella Shop, left here Sat
urday for San Francisco, where she
will attend special style events sched
uled for "market week."
Fall and winter apparel for the
Cinderella Shop will be selected by
Mrs. Hayes before she returns from
the southern state.

Interesting Talks
The regular monthly meeting of
the Woman's Missionary society of
the Christian church was held Wed
nesday afternoon In the church par
lors with Mrs. F. J. W II mot. president,
in charge of the business period.
"And He Sent Them Forth,' was
the topic of the devotional service led
by Mrs. Archer. The presentation
period waa in charge of Mra. Ruth
Wood and the topic waa "The Native
Church Carries On." Mrs. A. D. Curry,
in charge of the study period, gave
an interesting survey of the homes
for the care of the aged, and Mrs.
Arnold Bohnert entertained with a
aolo.
Mrs. Ireland, who spent many years
aa missionary In Porto Rica, gave a
very interesting and Instructive talk
on conditions on the Island.
"In the Harvest Fields of Tibet"
was the subject of a paper presented
by Mrs. J. T. Davis.

brief visit. They are former valley

Meeting Is Tuesday
Tuesday afternoon the women's
Foreign Missionary society will meet
at the First Methodist church, as host
to the Home Missionary society. Mrs.
E. C. Koppen will be hostess. As
Tuesday Is opening date for mite
boxes, all members sre requested to
bring boxes to the meeting.

Here With Relatives
G. L. Boudewyn and daughter, Miss
Mabel DeOroba Boudewyn, and Mr.
Boudewyn's brother, A. T and son,
Lester, all of Spokane, are guests
here of their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
B. C. Boudewyn, and Mrs . E. R.
Sleight. Mrs. Sleight la a sister of
the Messrs. Boudewyn.
The visit has been In the form of
a reunion, as Mrs. Sleight has not
seen her guests tor the past eleven
years. The visitors have been here
for a week and plan to return to
their home In Spokane Monday.
It Is the Boudewyns' first visit to
Rogue River valley. After trips to
Crater Lake and other scenic points,
they said they would like to remain
for a longer vacation In southern
Oregon.

Mrs..Alenderfer and
Mrs. Jerome Return
From Extensive Trip
Mrs. O. O. Alenderfer and Mrs. E. C.
Jerome returned this morning Jrom
six weeks' trip to the east.
Mr. and Mrs. Alenderfer and Mr.
and Mra. Jerome left June 14 on the
Bhrinere' special train to attend the
national ehrlnera' convention in
Minnesota, spending a dsy In Yellow
stone park on route.
The party visited the Century of
Progress exposition in Chicago before
returning to Spokane by way of the
Canadian Pacific, with a stop of a
day and night at Lake Louise.
Mr. Alenderfer and Mr. Jerome re
turned to Medford from Seattle the
latter part of June, leaving their
wives for a two weeks' visit at the
L. F. Cragln summer home on Hood's
canal near Seattle. Mrs. Alenderfer
and Mrs. Jerome also spent a week
at Everett, Wash.
On Saturday, July 38, they went to
Portland, and after visiting at the
home of K. A. Metschan. left for
home last Friday evening.
Upon arriving here, they" found Mr.
Alenderfer had prepared a breakfast
for them at the Alenderfer home.
Guesta for the enjoyable affair were
Mr. and Mra. A. B. Cunningham, Mr.
and Mrs. Ben Trowbridge, and Mr.
and Mra. Jerome.
The Jeromea and Alenderfers re
port a wondeful tip.
