American women in particular, hive
been responsible for the headaches
from which aome British textile
manufacturers have been aufferlng re
cently as a result of rapid-fire change
of taste across the Atlantic In tha
all-Important matter of fashion in
clothes and dress materials.
Not only are Americans regarded
here as leaders of style In women's
clothes, but they always are on tha
lookout for novelty in design and
color, according to fashion experts.
As a result, British textile and cloth
ing manufacturers are being compelled
more and more to break with the
more conservative methods hitherto
prevailing in order to cope with the
kaleidoscopic movements of fashion
In the United States.
John Mltcheson, consul-ln-charge of
the trade department at the British
Consulate General In New York, de
clared recently In a press Interview
that textile firms In Great Britain
still are able to maintain a mode
rate export business with the United
States, owing to the attention paid
by them to developments in color and
style, and despite the tremendous
progress made In recent years by
manufacturers of textiles In America.
He stated, however, that the de
mand for novelty In the United State
presents an element of danger to
manufacturer a. e stocks of goods are
llablj to decrease In value In an
alarming manner, owing to a sudden
about-face of fashion.
That this demand for novelty on
the other side of the Atlantic la mak
ing textile-goods manufacturers in
Great Britain throw overboard the
conservative methods of the past cen
tury waa confirmed to the United

difference of opinion, however, re
garding the extent to which these
methods have already been scrapped.
