Communists Active In Strike
Turmoil Held On Criminal
Syndicalism Charges
'General Strike' Held
'Revolutionary.'
PORTLAND, Ore., July It. (A)
Twenty of the 85 men arrested by
city police last Wednesday In a raid
communist headquarters here,
were today ordered held to the Mult
nomah county grand Jury on crim
inal syndicalism charges.
Most of those Investigated were
held on 35 ball, but Dirk De Jonge,
one-time communist candidate for
mayor of Portland, and Clyde Stewart
were held under 1000 ball each.
In holding the 90 for Investigation
by the grand Jury, District Judge
Hendrlckson declared the criminal
syndicalism law defines criminal
syndicalism as the doctrine which
advocates physical violence- as a
means of accomplishing an Industrial
change or revolution.
The court observed, too, that "per
sons In authority have stated that n
general strike Is the equivalent of In
dustrial revolution."
The court feels It Is unjust to put
all the blrme on ths communists,"
Judge Hendrlckson said, "but com
munism Is an Inciting and aggravat
ing force which has engendered bit
ter neas and extended the duration of
the strike."

The MAIL TRIBUNE'S
NET PAID CIRCULATION
Is Now at The
Highest Point In The
History of This Paper
Taken from Audit Bureau of Circulation Publishers Report of
June 30, 1934
THE Mail Tribune is delivered to practically all homes of potential buyers in the
Rogue River Valley as well as many in Northern California. In addition to this,
the weekly "Merchant's Edition" gives added coverage in excess of 5000, includ
ing weekly coverage of the city of Grants Pass. The prestige of a newspaper, earned
through years of constructive public service, has much to do with the pulling power of
advertising . . . that is why the largest portion of advertising in this territory appears in
the columns of the Mail Tribune and is the reason the public depends upon this medium for
shopping news as well as general news and features ... the same care is maintained in the
handling of advertising copy, large and small, as is put forth in assembling and publish
ing of news.
The Mail Tribune Has a Larger Net Paid Circulation than the Combined
Net Paid Circulations of All the Other Jackson County Newspapers With
Advertising Rates About One-third the Combined Rates of These Other
Newspapers
