JUBILEE 10 COST
NDERWRITERS 55

(Contlnueo iium page one)
standing featurea, and the response
which they received from the press of
the country would indicate that they
were of far greater magnitude than
we had expected, and would have done
credit to any city, irrespective of Its
size.
"As far as the staging of every de
tail of the Jubilee Is concerned, Med
ford has nothing to apologies for.
Everything went off aa scheduled, and
with greater success than we had
hoped for.
You may remember that 18
months ago this county was torn
with political atrlfe, and Medford was
on the front psge of newspapers all
over the United States. This waa not
constructive publicity, but worthless
notoriety. Within 18 months the pic
ture has changed to the extent, that
aa one prominent head of a large
newspaper said here, 'You have the
best publicized city in America the
past two weeks.'
The worthless notoriety cost this
county almost one hundred thousand
dollars. The constructive publicity
created by the Jubilee coat twelve
thousand dollars. Looking at It from
a clty-wlde viewpoint, the cost was
a good Investment, for In all prob
ability, Medford benefitted from an
advertising atandpolnt to possibly me
tune of five hundrad thousand dol
lars.
"Last year the Chamber of Com
merce had one of Its most successful
yeara along publicity lines. Yet.
during the months of April, May and
June this year, the publicity we re
ceived was ten times greater tnan
the previous 13 months. This, mind
you, is only taking into consideration
the clippings which we actually have.
"Citizens of Medford have always
been civic minded. They have never
failed to contribute to any worth
while proposition for the benefit of
the community as a whole, and we
feel reasonably aure you will appre
ciate that taking everything Into
consideration, the cost of the Jubilee
was a good Investment, and not a
liability.
"The task waa a big one and every
one did his part In putting over the
various events of the celebration.
Hundreds of our citizens donated their
time daily in order that everything
would go off with clock-like precision.
We know that each of the under
writers will maintain that same spirit
and sincerely trust you will send In
your check In order that we may
clean up the bills which are still
outstanding and once again demon
strate that Medford knows how, and
is the biggest little city In the United
States of America."
