of the virus that causes the disease
of mumps. The scientists Dr. Claud

pasture after working for more than
a year on monkeys, ascertained that
a swelling of the animal's parotid
glands (Jaws) invariably followed in
oculation with saliva from human
beings suffering with mumps. !
"The experimental disease can be
produced at will," Dr. Johnson stated,
"and It la Judged that this virus,
which does not correspond with any
known virus familiar to us, Is the
causative agent of mumps."
The doctors continue their experi

rus and expect shortly to develop an
Immunizing agent and a serum for
treatment of the disease.
Previously, medical authorities were
divided on the cause of mumps.
Opinions varied with bacteria, a fil

Described By Carnegie In
stitute Observatory Scien
tist As 'Swarm of Bees
Drifting Through Air'
WASHINGTON. (UP) Dr. Edwin
Hubble, astronomer of the Carnegie
Institution's Mount Wilson Observa
tory, believes, he has obtained a sam
ple of the universe which lies beyond
the reach of present-day scientific
instrument!.
For several years Dr. Hubble has
been focussing a 100-inch- telescope
on the realms of the nebulae -systems
of stars described as "swarms of bees
drifting through the air" far beyond
the outermost limits of the system
embracing our sun and planets.
Tiny Patches of Light.
Although the nebulae nearest the
earth are large and bright,' the as
tronomer disclosed the majority are
so distant that through a telescope
they appear faint patches of misty,
vaporous light.
This Is the frontier of the known
universe the frontier which bounds
a vast sphere, 600,000,000 million light
years In diameter, throughout which
are scattered 100,000,000 nebulae.
At a recent meeting of the National
Academy of Sciences, Dr. Hubble de
scribed the characteristics of the uni
verse thus revealed and expressed the
opinion that the observable region is
a fair sample of the universe lying
beyond the reach of present-day In
struments. Nebulae Uniform.
He said the distribution in space
of the observable nebulae waa ap
proximately uniform and that If the
known region of the universe were
divided into 100. 1,000 or even 10.000
equal parts, the nebulae contents of
each division's respective parts would
be si ml Is r.
Although he believes the realm of
the nebulae stretches far beyond the
frontiers of the universe now observ
able, Dr. Hubble found no Indication
of a super-system of nebulae analog
ous to a grander system of stars.

The new machine, however, will be
bigger than1 its predecessor, having a
length of 26 feet and a width of 10
feet. Work on the machine was made
possible by a portion of the CWA
funds which were distributed In this
district.
According to engineers, the differ

the work which would take a dozen
expert mathematicians a week to
complete. While the machine can
be used in all branches of engineer
ing, It will especially aid In calculat
