enrolles from San Francisco, who were
en route to Qrants Pass. Lieutenant
H. A. Barrls, Inf.-Res., accompanied
the men from Medford to Grants Pass
on the Shasta yesterday forenoon.
At a meeting of the Active club last
evening, the new president, Chester
Hubbard, announced the committees
he had appointed for the ensuing six
months.

and Hllding Bengtson; entertainment,
Bruce Bauer and Hildlng Bengtson;
Boy Scouts, Harold Larson, Jack But

DESTROYED BY BLAZE
s. . EVERETT, July 11. (AP) The
manual training and domestic scl
' Snc e buildings of Arlington high
school were destroyed by fire today,
and the high school and several ad
jacent buildings, Including some
dwellings, were aflarne.
The fire quickly spread to other
structures and was soon out of con
trol. The two manual arts build
ings were destroyed within half an
hour and reports said the main high
school building was burning fiercely
and at that time was apparently
doomed.

Receives Medical Care William
Hoar of Gold Hill Is a patient at the
Sacred Heart hospital where he is
receiving medical care. He was taken
to the hospital yesterday.
Visiting Here Mr. and Mrs. O. L.
McDonald are visiting for a few days
with Lawrence Crawford, clerk at the
postoffice, at his home on the Coker
Butte road. Mr. Crawford la on a
few days' vacation.
Lieut. Bach to San Diego Lieuten
ant Walter L. Bach, Medical Corps.
U. S. navy, is to be relieved from CCC
duty In the Medford district July 15,
and will report to San Diego for duty
pending orders to an Astatic station.
At the Sacred Heart John Land
of this city was taken to the Sacred
Heart hospital yesterday for observa
tion. Charles Dakota, a member of
the CCC camp at South Fork of the
Rogue, la receiving medical care at
the hospital.
Potters Leave Today Capt. M. Mil
ton Potter, executive officer at the
Medford CCC headquarters, departed
today on a seven days' leave, and with
Mrs. Potter will visit fr'ends at Fort
Lewis, Wash., where he was formerly
stationed.
To Confer on Strike A Boeing
plane belonging to the Standard Oil
company stopped here to refuel this
forenoon, en route to Portland from
San Francisco, to confer on matter
pertaining to the longshoremen's
strike. Two oflclals, one a director
of the company, were passengers In
the ship.
Takes Prisoners North Leo Mo
Lain, deputy United State marshal,
returned to Medford on the Oregonian
today from Portland, where he had
taken S. C. Starrett, druggist, and
Boyd Jackson, both of Chlloquin. The
two were arrested following the Issu
ing of secret Indictments by the fed
eral grand Jury.
WRONG FIRE ALARM
SOUNDED AT HOTEL
"In case of fire, break ttils glass"
did not call the city fire department
to the Lake Hotel last evening at
7:35, when fire broke out In the
boiler room of the building on West
Main street, and as a result, the fire
was put out by a bucket brigade at
the hotel.
According to Fire Chief Roy Elliott,
the manager of the hotel thought
the alarm extended to the fire de
partment, and for that reason did
not put In an additional call until
Inter. Chief Elliott said today that
the alarm is only for persons In the
hotel, and does not havo outside con
nections. .

Air Lines plane leaving Chicago for

DODGED HIS TAX
BERLIN. July 11. (AP) A war
rant was Issued today for the "tern
porary" arrest of Otto Klemperer.
who has conducted various American
orchestras, and is now In Vienna.
Klemperer, a Jew. was former musi
cal director-general of the state opera
In Berlin.
The warrant for his arrest was Is
sued by the reich ministry of finance
and was made public In the official
gazette. It was also stated that the
musician's property was to bo confis
cated. Klemperer, who left Germany early
In 1933, was accused of tax evasion.
It was said he owed the reich treas
ury a tax payment "amounting
roughly to 4560 marks ($1820) plus
five per cent Interest for every 14
days."
The gazette warned Germans who
were financially indebted to Klem
perer not to repay their debts but to
register them with the local tax
office.
Failure to do so would be punished,
the announcement said, continuing:
"Police, tax officials, customs offi
cers and others are herewith author
ized to take the above-named tax
evader Into temporary custody and
surrender him to the state prosecutor
should he be found In Germany."

states.

Stimulation of the lumber Industry
of the far west to auch an extent
that consumption In 1035 will be at
least 143 per cent of that for 1934

PORTLAND, July 11. (AP) City
park officials were today Investigat
ing the death yesterday In Grant
park pool of Jack Lake, 13. Officials
were told the boy had been playing
with other lads, carrying them on his
back in the pool. He waa missing
but a few momenta when playmates
reported his disappearance to a life
guard. The Investigation will deter
mine whether he drowned or died
from a heart attack.

Mrs. Marah Ellis Ryan, writer and
international authority on Indians,
died today at her home In the Silver
Lake district from encclphalltls
(sleeping sickness). She was 68 years
old.

Dance of Tulun," "The House of
Dawn" and "Pagan Prayers."
