Rer. Fred M. Weatherford, pastor, In j
spoaking Irom the local Church ot
the Nazarcne laat night, used u hl
topic, "Fool. Pacta and Fsvors," and
drew bla text from Prerbs 14 :. In
part, he aald:
"The Monday dalliea of New York
City not long alnce devoted apace to
J6.000 words presenting synopsis from
41 aermona that had boen preached
from the pulpits of the great me
tropolis the preceding Sunday. In
those aynopsls. with but one excep
tion, the word 'sin- was neither uaed
directly or Indirectly. A visitor listen
lng In from another world would
have thought he had found the
Utopia of the golden age.
"But alas and alack, this Is but the
vain gesture of a fools culture sin
Is so rsmpant and devastating In the
Inroads It is making upon the modern
life of America that all but the willful
blind bang their heads In ahsme.
"Co-lncldent with modern pulpit
silence In prosecuting Ood's esse
against sin. there came the belittling
denial of the thing Itself. But the
stinging Irony of this denial la the
paradox of the moat colossal avalanch
of sin's crime wave that has ever
swept our nation. 80 widespread and
devaatatlng has been the wielding of
sin's high hsnd, that for the first
time In our national htatory ex-Presl-dent
Hoover was compelled to call
Into being a national crime commis
sion. In an effort to curb the merci
less tide of aln.
"To deny that aln Is the cause of
our social and economic distress Is
like purjured testimony In the In
vaded atmosphere of a skunk, to say
that his presence produced no of
fensive odor.
"8ln In Its essence is a lsck of con
formity to the revealed lawa of Ood
either by act. disposition or atate.
Jamea. the apostle, Bays, To him
therefore, that knoweth to do good,
and doeth It not. to him It Is aln.'
"Man la not the only sufferer for
the commission of his sins Incident
to a aelf-centered life, and he has
not paid the debt of his own folly,
merely by his personsl resplng. In
resplng his own sowing he hss only
paid the first Installment: his lnno
cent offspring hss yet to reap the
penalty of his sinfulness. If you
have no regard for yourself, consider
your responalblllty In giving the un
born generation a Just bill of heslth.
"Cslvary apeaka In louder terms
than words. In telling us of Qod's
efforts to salvage the human race
from aln. It was there that our free
dom was purchased. The price of our
redemption hss been psld for In the
currency of blood. The question la
up to you will you realise upon the
beneflta purchased there and seek him
as your merciful benefactor and re
warder. Or receive the death wages
for sin,"
