SCARE, NOT BITE
AUSTIN, Tex. (UP) Half the peo
ple who die every year after belnr
bitten by snakes are scared to death,
and not actually killed by the snakes,
In the opinion of' a. E. S. Tordt, who
makes a business of raising reptiles
and extraotlng their venom for scien
tists. To prove that hie side la more than,
untested theory, Tordt points to the
fact that ho himself Is-still alive,
and has been bitten several tlmea.
While golrig about the ticklish bus!,
ness of holding a snake by the Jaws,
stloklng his finger In Ha mouth, and
"milking" the poison from the rep.
tile's venom ducts, Tordt occasional,
ly la bitten. When auch accldenta
occur, he calmly outs the wound
and sucks H. Before long he Is ready
to work on another snake.
This expert also believes that
snakes really are friendly creatures
and won't bite anyone unless they
are hurt or acared. Treat them with
respect and don't make them ner
vous, and there's little danger of an
attack, he says.
CRATER LAKE 1
WASHINGTON, June 28. (AP)
Crater Lake National park In Oregon
la going to have a useful airmail
stamp after all.
When Postmsster General Parley de
cided to Include that national park
In the aeries of 10 special national
park stampa, he designated It as an
8-cent airmail atlcker.
Almost Immediately a 6-cent air
mall charge was approved, to atart

a-cent stamp next to useless for air
mall purposes.
Representative Martin (D Ore.)
asked Parley to change the denomlna.
tlon of the etamp to 8 cents, which
was done. A picture of Oregon's sky
blue lake, nestling In the crater of
