tougher on seamen, would compli
cate their work and might even
Jeopardize their safety, In the opin
ion of Capt. J. P. Hellweg, whose

a second.
Vigorous Campaign
The 13-month advocates have been
campaigning vigorously for their
calendar. Their 12-month opponent
have battled Just as strenuously,
They Insist that the 12-month cal
endar has worked fairly well for a
good many years now, and that any
revision should be slight to prevent
ehaos following any exaggerated
chance.
The World Calendar association, of
which Captain Hellweg Is a member,
proposes that the first month of
each quarter, January, April, July and
October, shall have 81 days and that
all other months shall have 30. Each
quarter would have 91 days. That
would leave an extra day at the end
of the year, which would be a holi
day. On leap years there would be
another holiday. Immediately after
June 30.
Business Aid
The captain believes that the sim
plified calendar would aid in the
conduct of bualnesa and still not
complicate astronomy and navigation,
nor throw the regular succession of
holidays, religious and otherwise, out
of (fear.
The 13-month calendar, on the
other hand, has so many disadvant
ages, ' according to Captain Hellweg,
that it wouldn't benefit anyone, with
the possible exception of lawyers and
accountants, who might be busy un
tangling business litigation. History
shows, he says, that after the change
to the Gregorian calendar In Eng
land, more than one-third of all liti
gation for the ensuing 70 years, re
sulted from the change.
The number "13" In the first
place, he continues, is against the
13-month calendar. It la a clumsy
number, difficult to use In divis
ion, and unlucky. In the opinion of
large sections of the population. Cap
tain Hellweg says he doesn't think
that people who ateer clear of "13
all their lives would find much hap
piness using a calendar which would
force "13" on them for a whole
month every year.

Itt cups diced cooked ham.
tt cup diced celery.
1-3 cup diced cucumbers.
1 tablespoon chopped onion.
1 tablespoon chopped green pep
per. 1 table po'on chopped sweet
pickle.
teaspoon aalt.
teaspoon paprika.
cup salad dressing.
Mix and chill Ingredients and serve
on lettuce.
Creamed Peas and Potatoes
ft tablespoons butter.
4 tablespoons flour.
1 cups milk.
l teaspoon aalt.
teaspoon celery salt.
V4 teaspoon paprika.
1 cup cooked peas.
1 eup diced cooked potatoes.
1 tablespoon chopped parsley.
Melt butter and add flour. When
blended add milk and cook until
creamy sauce forms. Stir constantly.
Add seasonings, peas and potatoes.
Cook a minutes over low fire. Pour
Into serving dish and sprinkle with
parsley.
Sour Cream Jumbles
2-3 cup butter.
2 cups sugar.
2 eggs.
2-3 cup sour cream.
1 teaspoon vanilla.
1 teaspoon lemon extract.
1 teaspoon nutmeg.
teaspoon salt.
4 cups flour.
1 teaspoon soda.
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs
and cream. Beat well and add rest
of Ingredients, mixing lightly. Drop
portions from tip of spoon onto
greased baking sheets. Space three
Inches. Bake 12 minutes In moderate
oven.

members of the state highway com
mission were In Salem a short time
today enroute south with R. H. Bal
dock, state highway engineer. Chair
man Leslie M. Scott and Carl G.
Washburne will go to Reedsport to
Inspect the site of the proposed bridge
there, while E. B. Aldrlch will go to
Roseburg to attend the state editorial
convention.
