WHAT AILS EVERYBODY.
. Of all the passions, that which Is
least known to us Is Idleness: she la
the most ardent and evil of all. al

If we consider her power attentively,
we shall find that In all encounters
she makea herself mistress nf our sen

can atop the greatest vessels, she Is
a hidden rock, more dangerous in the
most Important matters than sudden

magic charm which suddenly sua
pends the most ardent pursuits and
the moat obstinate resolutions. In
fact, to give a true notion of this pus.

all our wants, (Reflection, of Le-

-THE NEW REDUCTION
PERSON HERE
Not so long ago I told here the news
of the Introduction of a new medicine
which seemed to be the answer to the
maiden's prayer something that
would reduce
weight regardless
of diet and exer
cise and massage
and style of dress,
I explained that
I had been trying
it out on the dog
not Tony the
WIrlah Terror,
not by & Jugful,
but the sly dog
who conducts
thla contemptible
column and
that it had kept mo quite warm but
I had lost a couple pounds a week
and didn't mind the discomfort from
the increased warmth and Increased
sweating. I carefully pointed out,
however, that "the new medicine to
reduce without dieting or exercising
can be safely and effectively given
only under the personal supervision
of the physician; In this respect It is
like Insulin for building up under
weight Individuals."
A Los Angeles grl engaged In social
service work heard about the new
medicine from a friend who was
physician's office nurse, and the nurse
in turn had hoard aome physicians
discussing the new medicine. Well,
this young woman immediately
bought some capsules of the new
medicine and began taking it regu
larly, on her own hook and without
benefit of Medicine. According to the
history subsequently obtained from
friends and family she had continued
taking the medicine for five or alx
days. Then she was 111 In bed-
thought it was the weather or grip
or something complained pf "burn
ing up," but took some more of the
magic medicine, and presently lapsed
into unconsciousness and was
moved to the hospital. There her tem
perature was found only moderately
elevated, but the breathing was very
fast, She died a few hours after ar
rival In the hospital.
Since no one knew what had caused
death a very careful autopsy was done.
"Following the autopsy we were un
able to propose so much as an Intel
ligent guess regarding the cause ot
death," says the physicians' report.
Only by questioning the relatives did
they learn that the young woman had
been taking dlnltrophenol.- And fow

NEW YORK

NEW YORK, June 31. New York's
over-supply of left-over speakeasy res

miracle that will fill them again
There are several

garnered the best dance orchestras,
Liquor stores also are In. a quan

earn enough to pay license fees. Big
department stores are not only able
to undersell, but again there is the
confidence inspired by old-established
institutions that have proved their
honesty.
New York, after years of downing
Inconceivably vile concoctions, baa
become tnaclngly boot-legger leery.
The moat noticeable result of the
clean-up has been the quick death of
the cup-Joints, where so many were
not only poisoned and bludgeoned but
often murdered.
The biggest backlog In the literary
blase. Hervey Allen, appeared to ful
fill expectations at his first New York
cocktail party. One Impassioned glos
sarlan described him thus: "A large,
simple, highly unllterary looking man.
he seemed a King Canute with tides
of gossip lapping, albllantly at his
feet." With "Anthony Adverse" ap
proaching a half million sale, Allen
will rest on his oars for a year or moie

look unlike Vincent Youmans, the

arrival In Paris for the first time. His
French was so perfect everyone
thought him Parisian born. He lived
hard and gallantly on the volcano

Day's News
By FRANK JENKINS,
THIS headline looms big on
front page "73rd Congress Ends
Session."
Why Is adjournment of congress
such Important news?
The answer Is plain. People are
afraid that too many more new laws
might give a setback to reviving bust
ness, and are glad that congress has
adjourned so that it can pass no more
new laws,
THE 73rd congress was one of the
shortest snd by long odds the
most expensive on record, lt appro-
prlatlons exceeding TEN BILLION
dollars.
Ten billion dollsrs means nothing
to us, because we have become so
stunned by big figures that we can
no longer grasp their significance,
but If anybody had mentioned to our
grandfathers that an American con-
gress, in time of peace, would aome
day appropriate In excesa of S10.000,
000,000 they would have fallen in
faint.
WHAT of our grandchildren?
Will they be doing things on
vastly bigger scale than we are, Just
as we are doing things on a far
grander scale than our grandfathers?
Or will they be trying to pay the
debts we are now making?
o
UR grandfathers, out here In the
Far West, lived In log houses,
heated by fireplaces and ventilated
by the wind that blew through the
cracks.
Our children, if we are to believe
what enthusiastic lookers into the
future tell us, will live in houses that
are heated in winter and cooled in
summer by machines that wash and
condition the air, removing excess hu.
mldlty In winter and putting back
needed humidity In summer.
These houses will make their own
climate, and It will alwaya be Just
right neither too hot nor too cold,
too wet or too dry. And the same
will be true of the business buildings
In which we work.
IN THOSE happy days, we shall
have unpleasant weather onlv when
we go outdoors. Nobody Is ambitious
enough yet to think of controlling
the weather outdoors.
There are some things that even
modern man hesitates to tackle.
THESE houses of the future will be
equipped with awnings that are
lowored automatically by electric mo.
tors when the sun comes out and
drawn up when the aun seta or hides
behind a cloud.
They will have wlndowa that close
mmedlately when raindrops fsll upon
a sensitive recorder, and open again
when the rain ends.
These wlndowa will have double
panea, with an air space between to
prevent loss ot heat in cold weather,
thus saving fuel.
THE MASTER of one of these houses
1 will sleep In a bed beside which
will be a row of buttons, and by push.
Ing these buttons he will actuate mo-
tors that open and shut the windows
and turn on the heat If It la too cold
or turn on the cold It it la too warm.
Whether or not these buttons will
light the kitchen fire and put on the
bacon and egga Is not aa yet stated
with authority.
But we can look for most anything.
THE Interesting part, however, la
1 atllt to come.
Wo are told that thoso amazing
houses, with all these conveniences
and many others not listed here, will
be built tor far less than the houses
we now live in so that ordinary peo
ple, not Just the big bugs, will be
able to own and live In them.
N THE past three or four 'years of
severe depression, when people have
been chiefly concerned with getting
enough to eat and wear and keeping
some sort of house over their heads,
the Idea has grown up that the good
daya are all past, and that we haven't
much to look forward to In the futuro.
Don't let yourself believe anything
like that. The good days AREN'T
over. Sooner or later this depression
will disappear and will be followed
by a period of comfort and happi
ness and progress that will exceed any
similar period In the past.
ANOTHER thing '
The comforts and the happiness
and the progress of this era that Is
coming will be shsred by common.

Communications
Would Rationalize Thought
To the Editor:
Please accept my thanks for pub
lishing my communication, "Pioneer
ing in the Philosophy of a New Deal."
I have been of the thought that It
needs further Illustration.
I nthe Issue of the Medford Mall Tri
bune June 18th, the writer presented
the first of his communications upon
the philosophy of a new deal. Pro
ceeding we take up the first propos!
tlon, 1. e. one of the main tasks be
fore our Western civilization Is to
rationalize our standards of thought
and action in their relation to the af
fairs of dally life. Just what do 1
mean? I mean our thoughts must be
rationalized to conform them with
the thoughts behind the acta and
work of the New Deal.
Unless we so systematize our
thoughts In this respect we cannot
have any grasp of the ideas and ldeas
behind the philosophy of a new deal.
For we create no rational ground up
on which to base our understanding
of the processes Involved In the phil
osophy of a new deal.
In the past we have failed to ration
alize our attitude toward the objects
to be won In this our great struggle
to throw off conditions that have a
death lock upon the institution of
our civilization. Because we could not
rationalize our thoughts we are un
able to form any intelligent idea, up
on which to base our understanding
of and for the acts and processes we
find ourselves facing today. It Is a
day wherein we sea confusion walking
hand tn hand with unlashed skepti
cism. There is confusion of plan and
purpose in our attitude of mind that
hides from our view an understanding
of the true picture the benefits to be
derived, the privileges to be gained
In having before the mind's eye a
clear cut understanding as to what
this new deal for humanity means to
us all.
I am writing simply. Simply be
cause It is my purpose to clear away
any ambiguity there may be In your
mind, so that the plan and purpose
of a new deal in our philosophy of
life will present to your mind a new
clean, clear picture of the new deal ;
in action. So that the Intelligence of
this age will fully appreciate the
truth and the splendid American spir
it of Democracy that runs through
every avenue and angle of the New
Deal, this purely and truly American
work, a new deal for humanity In
purpose, spirit and philosophy.
If you, reader, will it that you will
co-operate In this task with the men
and women who are the Pilots, in
pioneering this philosophy and work
of a new deal in a new era then, only
can you understand and truly know
the spirit and purpose of a new deal,
and the full meaning of the words
spoken by the martyred Lincoln, that
this nation under God shall experi
ence a new spiritual birth, and new4
consciousness of what Is meant by
dedication to the Ideal of a new deal
that this government of. for, and by
the people shall not perish from the ;
earth, ' representing as it does the
highest, the most humane effort of
all time, the past and present to ra
tionalize the life and work of govern
ment, to create a greater measure, of
equality among men, to open to them
new avenues of endeavor In their
quest for a full measure of life and
liberty In the pursuit of happiness. I
am making a plea to you my reader,
to Join me In the laying aside the con
flicting thoughts that have torn our
reason to shreds and left our minds
In chaos, bereft of Faith, Hope and
Charity.
Faith in the sincerity of our Presi
dent's Ideas and purposes for our own
concern (we his people) Hope that
the Intelligence he expresses and has
surrounded himself with can restore
to us happiness and prosperity to us
all, that out of the compassion of his
nature, earned by his own human suf
fering, he has for us all a full meas
ure of understanding of our suffer
ing, and for us all he would seal, a
full and ample measure of Charity,
complete with understanding.
Such Is the will and purpose of
God
With all of us, through suffering
comes understanding. It is the key
to the secret of the compassion lying
deep in every heart.
On the recognition of this princi
ple (compassion) lies the verdict of
this Western civilization's futuri
to be or not to be.
To be a new light in this world to
guide humanely the stream of hu
manity's purpose and progress ever
onward and upward toward the goal
of a grander light (understanding of
Life's purpose).
Not to be, then confusion, spiritual.
social and economic death, the decline
of all our creative work to decay, a
memory, a memory such as the ruins
in the old world and Europe, repre
sent today, of civilizations, eloquent,
pathetic, the living symbols of the
destructive principle In nature.
Is this to be with us? I cannot
think that thla can be. On every aide
of me I see expressed intelligence of
a high order. X know that by the In
telligent use of this wonderful creative
tool, applied with purpose and cour
age we will build toward a successful
solution to Civilization's problems.
Come then, let us stop for a mo
ment, clearing our minds from the
distorted thought forms that bewilder
us, forms that our reason vainly
strive to assemble Into practical plas
tic designs, the mind would mould
to figure and fact to play Its game of
Intelligence expressed vs. Annihila
tion's Waste.
Come, let us put thla tangled ake'n
aside, let us open the doors of the
mind so we may again breathe tn:o
them metlphorlcally speaking, a big
deep breath of pure life-giving oxy
gen. Under Its stimulus we will pro
ceed In an orderly way to where the
philosophy of a new deal leads us.
It holds the key to a newer, fuller ex
presslon of American Democracy. Let
us hope that other publications wt.i
take It upon themselves to spread the
gospel and shed the true light upon
this philosophy of a New Deal.
