E
CAMP CLATSOP, June 14. (Special
correspondence With the third day
of camp life completed, mcmbera of
the 83nd brigade, stationed here for
two weeka' training, are rapidly set
tling down to camp duties, and pro
gressing In the lines of battle tac
tics.
Two phases of drill are being In
structed, close order drill and ex
tended order drill. Close order drill
has to do with the fomallty "end" of
Instruction, such aa the manual ot
arms, equad platoon and company
movements. Extended drill consists
ot regular battle tactics, among which
are listed scouting, patrollng, mus
ketry, and numerous other subjects.
Inter-camp baseball haa been or
ganized, and hotly-contested games
are conducted each night after mesa.
Soma good material Is alwaya on hand
to participate In the games, and
rivalry between teams la always at a
nigh pitch.
Rivalry between regiments at Clat
sop Is alao one of the annual out
standing features, especially In the
rifle companies. Each command tries
to outdrlll the other, and "bring the
bacon home" for their company.
Company "A" Is rated one of tha
highest companies at Camp Clatsop
this year. Receiving a "very aatls
factory" as a result of the federal In
spection at the home station last Feb.
ruary. Members of tha command hava
been working very hard to keep up
to the high standard which haa been
set. Considering the new recruits,
numbering about 75 per cent of the
company, drill haa been carried on
satisfactorily. 1
The morale of the company la very
high. Under the moat stressing de
tails, the men co-operate to tha
greatest degree.
Monday haa been set for "A" com
pany to go on guard, and as tha
guardmount la formal, preparation,
are now In order tor an excellent ap
