The sheriff's office today Issued
warning to youths to cease the prac
tice of exploding firecrackers on the
highways and byways in p re-Fourth
of July outbreaks of mischievous
patriotism.
The sheriff's office reports that
boys indulge In the following annoyances:
Throwing lighted firecrackers at
pedestrians and hitch-hikers from
autos, frightening the walkers, caus
ing them to Jump In front of ap
proaching cars.
Casting firecrackers Into the dry
grass along the highway, causing
fires apt to spread to grain and hay
fields. Coasting up behind autos and
throwing firecrackers In such a way
as to cause the driver to think a tire
has blown up.
Throwing firecrackers into autos
carrying women and children.
General creation of wreck menaces.
Furthermore, the authorities de
clare the premature celebration of
the nation's birthday Is contrary to
state law and city ordinances, as made
and provided, and that If any of the
culprits are caught they will be com
pelled to explain to the Juvenile
Judge.
The sheriff states he Is 'not prone
to throw cold water on youthful
patriotism, but feels the 'hazard of
wreck, fire, or Injury should be
checked. Numerous complaints have
been filed against the practice.

' KINGSTON, Ont. (UP) A new
North American milk and butter
record has been set by a six-year-old
Holsteln cow bred and owned by Byr
don Rath, of Moasley, Ont. The cow
produced 36,138 pounds of milk con
taining 1,911.35 pounds of butter dur
ing the period May 3, 1033, to May
, 1034.

Bride's Cake.
The nicest "Brlds's Cake" I know
of Is a fine grained "Angel" cake,
baked In a loaf, then cut and deco
rated with a dainty white Icing. The
standard recipe for Angel cake will
make quite a large loaf cake which
will cut Into about 30 squsrea of a
suitable size.
lVi cups egg whites
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
H teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons cold water
li4 cups sugar
1 cup pastry flour
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
V4 teaspoon almond flavoring.
Beat the eggs so aa to Include air
but not make too many large bub
bles. When stsrtlng to froth, add the
water and beat a little more, then
add the salt snd cream of tartar and
beat until It will hold a peak. Add
flavoring and blend In well. ' Sift
4he sugar and flour together several
times and fold Into the mixture care
fully. Pour Into a large loaf pan of
light metal (aluminum or light tin)
and bake slowly, (Gold oven for be
ginning, then set lower heat at 350
degrees and bake SO minutes).

1 cup ahortenlng
3 cups sugar
41$ cupa pastry flour
0 teaspoona baking powder
14 teaspoon aalt
1(4 cups milk
8 egg whites
1 teaspoon almond
1 teaspoon vanilla.
Cream ahortenlng and 1 cups of
sugar until very light, add lifted
flour and the milk alternately (1 cup
of flour before any milk). Beat well.
Beat egg whites until half beaten,
then add one-half cup of augar and
beat until atlff. Fold this Into the
first mixture and add flavorlnga. Bake
In' a loaf pan at 335 degrees for 60
minutes and at 860 degrees for 30
minutes.
Groom's Cake,
1 oup butter
8 cups sugar
eggs.
7 cups flour
34 teaspoon salt
1 cup tart fruit jam
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon aoda
3 cupa sour cream
3 lbs. chopped raisins
. 54 lb. sliced citron
Vi lb. chopped nut meat.
Cream the butter with sugar, add
beaten eggs and begin adding the
flour gradually, then alternately with
the sour milk and soda. Add remain
ing ingredients and blend well. Four
into well lined loaf pan and bake at
low heat for 3 hours (375 degrees).
Lemon Sherbet.
Vt oup sugar
3 cups water
' cup lemon Juice
3 egg whites
4 tablespoons augar
Few grains of salt.
Boll the augar and water together'
for five mlnutea. Add the lemon Juice
and chill In freezing tray for an hour.
Beat the egg whites until stiff, then
beat In the 4 tablespoons of sugar.
Remove the lemon tee from the tray
and place In a large bowl (which has
been chilled) and beat, quickly then
1010 in the beaten white and aalt.
Return to freealng tray and complete
freezing without stirring.
Vanilla Ire Cream.
4 egg yolks
3 cupa milk
-1 cup sugar
4 egg whites
3 teaspoona vanilla
. 14 teaspoon aalt
1 cup whipping cream.
Cook the milk, augar and slightly
beaten yolks to a soft ouatard and
pour Into freealng tray of refrigerator.
Freeze until eolld. Whip the chilled
whites until stiff and the cream until
It Just holds and Is '; smooth. Re
move custard from pan and beat
and then combine with whipped

ring. (Your favorite strawberry Jam
can make this a delightful sundae.)
' watermelon Salad.
Cut the rich red center fruit of
the watermelon with a French vege
table cutter. Remove seeds carefully
and store In refrigerator until ready
to serve. Place on bed of watercress,
serve with a little French dressing
and garnish with sprigs of mint.
(These can be made up very quickly
and are especially dainty and cool.)
Frozen Chicken Salad.
1 cup cold chicken
cupa crushed pineapple
0 tablespoons nut meats
44 teaspoon salt
1 cup whipping cream
1 cup mayonnaise.
Cut chicken In small cubes, drain
pineapple and cut the meats not too
fine. Add aalt to chicken and com
bine with drained fruit and the nuts.
Whip - the cream and blend with
mayonnaise, then fold both mixtures
together. Place In freezing tray and
freeze. Cut In squares and serve In
crisp lettuce cup. Garnish with
celery curl and stuffed olive.

OLDS ASKS DELAY

Delay of the civil suit of the Owen
Oregon Lumber company against Mil
lard D. Olds for money, first filed
In 1920, Is sought In a stipulation
and order filed today In circuit court
by the defendant. Olds sets forth
that he la now confined at Tucson,
Ariz., with arthritis and will be un
able to attend on the trial dates aet
July 10 and 11. An Indefinite post
ponement la sought.
The lumber company seeks 97,
104.27, it asaertedly paid on delin
quent taxes to prevent a levy by
Jackson county upon the Medford
Logging railroad, land and equip
ment, necessary for the carrying on
of the lumber business. The mill,
railroad and timber lands were pur
chased from Olds and it Is alleged
the taxes were not paid. The Owen
Oregon company made the payment
under protest.
Olds, in his answer, sets forth that
money was allegedly due him, which
more than offset the tax debt, and
that "a mutual, mistake arose over
the contract" for the Industrial pur
chase. Reform of the contract, be
sides the $7,104 taxpayment, la sought
in the suit.

SALEM, June 15. (AP) Two hear
ings have been called for Juns 21
at Salem, involving the operations of
J. J. Osenbrugge of Medford, and
F. M. Lock wood of Forest Orove to
determine whether their operations
under the state transportation laws
are In violation of the rules of the
public utilities commission.
The hearings will be conducted by
Herbert Hauser, state superintendent
of transportation.
The two operators were asked to
bring shipping receipts, copies of con
tracts, dally records of vehicle move
ments and other data In connection
with their operations.

El Salvador, with 3000 persons re
ported dead In the provinces, looked

supplies and emergency provisions.
Despite the terrific hurricane and
rain storm of last week, which so
badly wrecked the country that com

was semblance of a mild rush as
Jockaon oounty citizens remitted,
either in person or by mail, to the
tax collection department of the

before the close of the day.

sheriff, under three-year prison sen
tence, to file his last legal recourse,
a petition for rehearing. His ap
peal for a new trial was recently dis
missed by the state supreme court.

only th hops of executive clemency
to save him from the penitentiary.
Unless the petition for rehearing
Is filed, the state supreme court will
issue a mandate of commitment.
Schermerhorn has been at liberty on
$7500 bonds since last August.
The trial Judge, the district attor
ney, assistant attorney general, and
lifelong friends have characterised
