Within the city are to be found an ,

With the recreational possibilities
of this region, growing eaoh year,
through the demand of the public
for more mountain trails to travel
through verdant forests, the national
government Is now working hand In
hand with forest and park service to
make the beauty of southern Oregon
accesslbl to a greater number of
people. The program has been made
possible through Civilian Conserva
tion corps and National Recovery Act
allotments.
Open New Vacation Area
The largest project, now underway,
provides for the extension of the
Union creek csmp on the Crater
Lake highway from the road to the
river. The work la being handled by
R. H. Southwlok, foreman for the
Rogue River National forest. X. H.
Smith, forest technlclsn. Is msklng
recreational plans for development of
I the Upper Rogue Vslley, leading from
the north section of Prospect Into
the Diamond lake country. The pro
gram provides for a recreational de
velopment, Including selection of
suitable areas for camp grounds,
summer homes, and covers the Rogue
river proper with such tributaries as
have recreation vslue, such as Castle
creek. Flat creek and Poster creek.
All the work will be trlbutsry to
the new Diamond lake highway, now
ready for travel, which Is to be com
pleted this summer.

Opening of the Bky Lake area, in
cluding Blue Canyon, will make mora
aooesslbla ona of the most primitive
recreations! regions of tht state with
out destroying the virgin beauty of
the forests. The only development,
outside of campground facilities, will
be represented In trail construction.
The Sky Line trail from Mt. Hood to
Mt. Shasta, will be extended to In
clude this arsa, which will then be
accessible only by foot or horseback.
Open Four Mile Lake
Pour Mils lake, which forms the
southern extremity of the area, will
be opened to roads by early fall. The
region la already vlslttd by many
anglers and hunters, who enjoy a
rough hike and the abundance of
game to be found at the end of the
trail. The lakes, which are not filled
with fish, will be stocked by the
stat game commission, wblob U
planning to Introduce the albino
trout Into the region. Propagation
of ehrlmp will also be undertaken to
provide fish food, which Is needed.
Pish lske Is also to be surveyed for
summer home site, snd Improvement
of camp grounds to accommodate
still more people. The Increased de
mand for facilities there this season
has neceasltsted the action.
Many Visit Forest
There were In the Rogue River Na
tional forest last yesr 34,728 recrea
tional visitors. Recreation la each
year becoming a more recognised ac
tivity of the forest service, especlslly
In the Rogue River Nations! forest
because of Its relation to Crater Lake,
and officials expect It to become
the primary object of the service
within a few years.
The work now underway In the !
forest wsa not crested to give Jobs '
to the CCC's, but was Included In!
the 10-year program, outlined In

of users.
Southern Oregon has a splendid
system of surfsced highways,, leading
so all of the recreational certters, ac
cessible to automobiles. Lake O' the
Woods m.y be reached over a num
ber of good roads. From Medford,
either via the Dead Indian . road,
leaving the Pacific highway south of
Ashland, or via the Butte Falls road,
leaving the Crster Lske highway five
miles north of Csgle Point, Pishing,
swimming, boating, dancing, horse -bsck
ndlng, mountain climbing and
hunting, lead In diversions there.
Diamond lkke Famous
Diamond lake, famous for Its fish
ing, bostlng and swimming, Is located
30 mllea north of Crater lake, and
may be reached by direct road from
the world vender, or by leaving the
'.rater Lake highway at Union creek.

Lake, numerous attractive resorts are
found, "Sunset-on-the-Rogue," and
"Callfornla-on the Rogue" provide
attractive camping and cabins. At
"Rogue Elk" there Is a lodge with
dining facilities, Jim Grieves resort
at Prospect baa hotel and camp
ground and features home cocking.
Before Prospect Cssey'a csmp and
Cascade Oorge offer both recreation
and accommodations, Beyond Pros
pect Is Union creek, the last tourist
resort before entering the park.
Highways leading to and from Crater
Lake are all paved, and an excellent
road, encircling the lske Is now
undergoing Improvement,
Canadian law Protects Frogs
HAMILTON, Ont. (UP) A law for
bidding the killing of frogs for their
:ega. which are considered a prlre
delicacy, during May end June has
been passed here.

bringing to light vast quantities of
the precious metal.
The treasury hsd bought through
the mints and assay otflcea In the
first three and a half months of
1034 a total of 143,307.713 worth of
scrap gold, which is equal to the
output of the gold mines of the en
tire country last year, It U esti

4,000,000, la being bought every
week, or mors than twloa as much
at la mined. It Is estimated that up
wards of a billion dollars worth of
