In honor of the world war dead, at
the auxiliary's poppy headquarter In
Medford today. With a corps of as
sistants, Mrs. Aiken is completing
arrangements for "Poppy day," Fri
day, May 35, and Saturday, May 38,
when the auxiliary will distribute
popples throughout the city.
"While serving on the staff of the
T. M. C. A. overseas at headquarters
at Columbia university In November,
1818, Miss Molna Mlohael of Athens,
Qa., received a copy of a magazine
containing col. John McOrae's poem,
'We Shall Not Sleep,' " explained Mrs.
Aiken. "Touched by the poem's refer
ence to popples growing between the
rows of croases In the war cemeteries,
Miss Michael deolded to wear a poppy
In honor of th war dead. She pur
chased a number of popples and dis
tributed them among the workers at
the headquarters, starting a cuatom
that has spread throughout the
world."
The poppy was adopted as the
memorial flower of the American Le
aN
gion at the Legion's national con
vention in Cleveland, Ohio, In 1030.
When th American Legion Auxiliary
waa organized the following year, the
little red blossom became the Auxil
iary's ' memorial flower. The poppy

British Legion and Is worn In all
parte of the British emrire In trib
ute to th dead.
Th flowers which th American
Legion Auxiliary will distribute her
have been made by disabled veterans
and contributions reoelved for the
flowers will go to the Legion and

National Guard bureau said today
