DENVER, May 18. (p) The most
important gold miners' conference in
the Industry's history, called here for
the chief purpose of mapping out a
code, will become the scene. It was
predicted today, of a fiery contro
versy of quite different nature.
As the convention laid preliminary
preparations for the' general session
this afternoon, Carl J. Trauerman of
Butte, Mont., declared he and other
members of the strong Montana dele
gation will lead a fight to have the
bureau of mines in Washington re
placed by an entirely new organiz
ation. Trauerman, outspoken president of
the Montana Mining association, de
clared this action "win touch off the
dynamite of the convention."
Trauerman told the Associated Press
he and other Montana representatives
have been sounding the sentiments
of delegates, assembled here from
every gold producing area In the
country, and declared tbe majority of
them are In favor of "getting rid of
the present bureau and setting up a
whole new department."
"Mining men are not getting any
where with the present setup," he
said. "We want a department that
really will help the miners."
OFFICIAL ORDERS
In response to a call from the sher
iffs office, George W. Stokes, deputy
fire marshal from Salem, was In
Medford the first part of the week to
inspect the construction and fire
prevention methods of the Chateau
de Comte, the lodge which opened
recently on the Pacific highway near
the Jackson Hot Springs.
It was reported at the local fire
hall tha( Stokes found the two bal
conies of the building too weak to
support a large crowd, and recom
mended necessary repairs before the
place be allowed to open. Stringers
were ordered put along the. floor
Joists of the balconies, and 4 by 4
uprights were Installed six feet apart
to further strengthen the floors.
Stokes also recommended fire ex
tinguishers be placed in the kitchen,
ground floor, and balconies, and that
the chimney be extended further
above the peak of the roof to lessen
fire hazard. The lodge was again
inspected after the readjustments,
and reported to be In shape for open
ing to the public.

Yes, ladies, you have a chance to cattSh
the gold ring when you ride the merry-go-round.
But' the percentage is not in
your favor. After the thrilling ride is over
you may only have a nice lot of black
iron rings that can't be cashed in for
another , ride. And although you have a
chance of picking up something specially
good as you go round and round the
counter of bargain coffees, you'd better
not count on it. It may be fun to save a
few pennies per pound but you'll be out
all you save in what you lose in flavor
and strength. Play safe buy Hills Bros.
Coffee. It gives you more flavor and
strength in every cup than any "bargain
counter" coffee you could "ring!' And after
nil, isn't that the way you drink coffee
by the cup rather than by the pound?
