sounds of a new arrival at tbe

wearing an enormous tur coat,
strode toward him. "Dr. UlrlchT"

Tbe tall man nodded curtly. "Are
you Sergeant Harper?"
Tbe detective nodded. "Mrs. Du

"What are all these policemen do

"We found the bodies of two men
In tbe breakfast-room here, one tbe

evidence seems to Indicate that
they killed each other, but we

"All right. Doc, let's drop It. I'll

Harper pushed the restraining

the telephone. Harper returned to
tbe breakfast-room where Carlln
was once more absorbed In study
Ing the mark on tbe wainscoting
left by the spent bullet. The deteo-
tlve revolved slowly around that
strange corpse In the chair, study
ing the body from all angles.
A few minutes later Dr. Miller ap
peared, "Dr. Ulrlcb has sent tor a
nurse," be announced. "He says It
will be best not to move Mrs. Dufresne,
"What does he say about the
cut?"
"He thinks It can be healed with
out leaving a scar, but Mrs. Du
fresne will bave an uncomfortable
time of It for a few days. She'll
bave to be ted through a tube and
she won't be able to talk or move

tracks."
"Can you fix tbe time of death?"
The police surgeon approached
tbe murdered stranger. He moved
the dead man's arms slightly, bent
tbe ringers, and tilted the bead a
little to one side. He went through
mucb the same performance wltb
Officer Hamlll's body.
"I'd lay tbat death occurred
somewhere between seven and nine
o'clock. As you know, Sergeant,
rigor mortis sets In anywhere from
three to twelve hours after death,
depending on the aurroundlng tem
perature, tbe physical condition of
the subject, and so on. In each case
tbe muscles sre Just beginning to
set. Tbls tallies wltb the coagula
tion of the blood at the wounds."
Harper nodded. "We've net bad
much of a chance to trace things."
he explained, "and of this one man
we know nothing whatever. We do
know that Officer Hamlll 'pulled
his box' at eight o'clock. His failure
to ring up at nine led to the discov
ery .of the crime. Tbe search party
that went out after htm beard tbe
door of this house banging In tbe
wind and Investigated. That was
about ten o'clock or a few minutes 1
after."
Dr. Miller tucked away his watch.
"That fits In all right. Yes, It is my
opinion that they died at the same
time."
"Well, then, what about this.
Doc? Carlln thinks that the wound
In the bead could only have been
made by a .45 caliber steel-Jacket
bullet. The one we found was a .83
blunt-nose."
"Nonsense," he snorted In con
tempt. "You can't tell offhand, that
way. Bullets are tricky thlnga. no
matter what the caliber. Wben they
strike a bony surface there'a no
telling what course they'll take. Be
sides, you've got the bullet, haven't
you ?"
Yes, we have It We assume thai
It's from Hamlll's gun." .
"That ought to settle the argu
ment," Miller's voice took on
shrewd pitch. "Have you turned up
anything that looks fishy t"
"No, I haven t," Harper was
forced to admit.

The broker, Richard P. Uhlmann,
secretary of the Uhlmann Oraln Co.,
said Cutten opened an account with
his (lrm May 19, 1030.
"Mr. Cutten asked that the ac
count be carried as number S," said
Uhlmann.1 "We already had a num
ber 07, but no other number would
do, so we created account Q7 spe
cial." Uhlmann was the flrat witness at
the second dsy of the hearing, in
which Cutten Is cited for disbarment
from grain .markets of the United
States on the contention of the gov
ernment that he failed to report
grain holdings aa required under the
grain futures act.
The number system, said the brok
er, was a characteristic of Cutten's
market strategy.
"When Cutten was trading heavily
In 1031, frequently making deals of
more than 60,000 bushels, he used
this kind of account," he told tbe
court.
Leo F. Tlerney, government coun
sel, asked why Cutten's accounts
never exceeded 496.000 bushels. Ac
cording to the law, accounts over
600,000 bushels must be reported to
the government.
"He probably wanted to limit his
rlak," sail Uhlmann. "Every man's
blood pressure rises at a certain
point."
