SALES TAX STAND
VOTERS' INTEREST
Politics In Jackson county became
slightly tepid today, after weeks of
serenity, with the broadcasting of
mild canards, and claims that a num
ber of candidates were "double -shoot-
ing the turn" on the school relief
aales tax, by being for It In this city.
and against It In the country.
H, E. Conger, West Side district
farmer and republican candidate for
county Judge, was mentioned In this
connection. Conger in a letter to the
editor today, says: "Regarding the
sales tax I thought everybody knew
how I. stood. I am In favor of any
thing that looks like property " tax
relief."
The sales tax Is quite an issue with
many voters, particularly the women,
who ask candidates how they stand
on "relief for the schools." The ladies
in their questioning demand definite
answers, and are chary of last min
ute conversations.
Voters are being warned to beware
of eleventh hour canards and circu
lars. Distribution of dodgers contain
ing false and sensational statements
Is scheduled for late Thursday night.
one report said.
Typewritten slips of paper contain
ing the resurrected "Good Govern
ment congress" endorsement of Rufus
C. Holman for governor, H. E. Conger
for county Judge, Fred Rapp for com
missioner, Amos W. Walker for sher
iff, George Dunn for state senator.
Earl Snell for secretary of state, A.
C. Hough for circuit judge, and J.
M. Devers for congressman were left
in autos of this city last evening.
Street talk today plainly showed
a drift of local republican voters to
Joe M. Dunne for governor, and the
sentiment is evenly divided between
rural and town voters. Holman and
Brown have many supporters in the
country sections.
Democratic workers were busy cam
paigning for General Martin. The Ma
honey sentiment here Is not pro
nounced, but is said to be strong
in the north end of the county. Attor
ney George A. Codding Is scheduled
to speak tn behalf of the general
over the radio tomorrow at 11:30
o'clock.
Voters have started to shake off
their apathy, and a heavier rote than
first predicted is expected. Assessor
Coleman, best of the local prognostt
catora, predicts about 600 votes will
be cast about a 60 per cent vote.
Rain would cut this down.
Edward G. Robinson
In Rialto Picture
History repeats Itself at the Rialto
theater, where "Dark Hazard" Is being
shown until tomorrow night. It sel
dom, however, repeats Itself within
as short a space of time as In the
case of W. R. Burnett, celebrated
American novelist, and Edward G.
Robinson, equally celebrated film
star.
About three yeara ago a novel from
the pen of Burnett made Robinson
a star overnight. That picture was
"Little Caesar." It started a cycle of
gangster pictures that lasted for quite
some time.
And here history has started doubl
ing on Its tracks again. "Dark Haz
ard" again brings the combination
of Burnett and Robinson together.
Instead of being a gangster picture,
however, this latest release Is the
story of a well meaning, but Invete
rate gambler who loves animals, rac
ing, mankind and gambling too much
to retain the love of his wife whom
he adores.
EDDIE CANTOR AT
STUDIO TOMORROW
Eddie Cantor sings three lively new
song hits In hla Inimitable fashion
In "Roman Scandals," showing tomor
row at the Studio theater.
The numbers are "Keep Young and
Beautiful," "Build a Little Home,"
and "Tax On Love."
Gloria Stuart, David Mannera, Ed

Save the Schools!
To the Editor:
Are we going to let our public
school go on the rocka? What will
become of our atate If people have
to move out of It to educate their
.children? Wha,t will our property be
worth If we have any more taxes
loaded on than &t present? If the
sales tax does not pass many will
turn their property over to- our
bankrupt state. The sales tax will
save the state, and one does not
have to be a prophet to see the way
things will look up it the aales tax
goes through. It will be up and up.
People will come here to educate
their children and buy homes. Prop
erty will enhance In value and there
will be a smile tn Oregon that will
not rub off.
