SALES TAX CUTS
PROPERTY TAXES
PORTLAND, Ore. f8pl.) Property
taxes in North Carolina have been
reduced 36 per cent during the last
year, due to the sales tax and has
the generoua support of farmers,
home owners, and industries as a
result, according to an official letter
authorized by Governor Ehrlnghaus
of North Carolina and released today
for publication by the School Relief
and Property Tax Reduction League
of Oregon.
Since the legislature enacted the
sales act to relieve property tax-pay
ers of their too heavy burden, last
year a total of $4,316,561.55 has been
collected. The only opposition to
the act. It is stated, la from mer
chants who do not like to collect it,
but, says the letter, their opposition
now rapidly disappearing aa the ben
eficial effect of the tax grows.
We consider the sales tax success
ful In this state," declares the letter
which was signed by Harry McMul
lan, state director of assessments and
collections. "It haa Immediately
balanced our budget, restored our
credit, reduced taxes on property, and
saxed our schools from almost cer
tain collapse,
"We do not contemplate that oui
legislature would be willing to go
back to the property tax Jn lieu of
the present system. Property still
carries a heavy burden on account of
debt service liability."
In releasing the North Carolina
letter, the Oregon league pointed out
that every state reporting thus far,
shows that schools have been kept
open and property taxes heavily re
duced, because the sales tax adds
rundreds of thousands of otherwise
tax-free citizens to the tax rolls.
