Pert Kelton In
Craterian Hit
If all the people who think they
might have had careers and become
famous and wealthy If only some
thing or other had not prevented,
were laid end to end they would look
pretty silly lying there. And besides,
that Is no way to go about remedying
the disappointment.
Zasu Pitts Is afflicted with a car
eer complex in "Sing and Like It,"
at the Craterian theatre Friday and
Saturday, and this provides the basic
theme for this convulsing farce which
is proving so pleasing to theatre
goers. In this boisterous comedy, Miss
Pitta, as Annie Snod grass, is con
vinced that she might have been a
great singer if only she had not fall
en in love with the weak-chinned
Oswald. But then, suddenly, when nil
hope for the glitter and tinsel and
romance and glamor that is the stage
is almost gone, comes The Chancel
Nat Pendleton, in the role of a mush
hearted gang chief, thinks ZaSu's
singing of mammy songs Js elegant,
and he abducts her to put her in a
show.
After acquiring his star,, the gang
ster has to kidnap a musical pro
duction to put her In, so elects to
move in on a theatrical producer
known as the "mad genius of the
theatre," a part played., by Edward
Everett Horton. So ZaSil is all set,
and what she does with The Chance
is the big laugh moment of the
picture.
Aiding and abetting Miss Pitts,
Horton and Pendleton in the cause
of film foolishness, are Pert Kelton,
co-starred with Miss Pitts as the
gangster's gum-chewing girl friend
and Ned Sparks. Stanley Fields and
Matt McHugh as a trio of funny vil
lains. 'WALLS OF GOLD'
OPENS AT ROXY
"Walls of Gold," based on the
novel by Kathleen Norris, opened at
tne Roxy theatre this afternoon, and
proved Itself easily the best of tho
Norrla novels plcturlzed for the
screen. Sally Ellers, Norman Poster
and Ralph Morgan have the featured
roles.
The story of the picture deals with
the problem of a young and beauti
ful girl who must chooso between
love and the comforts of wealth.

by Fire Chief Roy Elliott, both as a
preventative of fires and to aid in
the cleanup campaign now under way

He pionted out that tho dry weeds
next to buildings were a fire hazard,
and that ofttlmes lighted cigarettes,
carelessly thrown away, ignited them,
causing serious dabage.

John Wayne rides across the screen
of the Rialto theatre tomorrow and
Friday in "Riders of Destiny," whlcn
occupies one-half of the double feat
ure program for those days. Playing
the role of Singln' Sandy, a myster
ious individual who turns up In a
cattle country to take part in a
ranchers' war over water rights, Wayne
becomes involved In numerous es
capades and hair-breadth escapes.
On the other half of the program.
Jack Holt is starred in "Whirlpool,"
with Jean Parker, Ltla Lee and Don
ald Cook in leading supporting roles.
'TemTdeat Studio
Is Unusual Story
One of tho most startling love
themes ever presented on the screen
was unfolded at the Studio theater
today with the showing of "Female,"
with Ruth Chatterton in the stellar
role.
This story is not of one love, but
of many. It reverses the role of the
philandering male, with Miss Chat
terton playing the part of the hunt
ress, who casts a cool and calculat
ing eye on the handsome young men
she selects for her vamplsh, nocturnal
adventures.
These are mostly employees of her
own concern, for she is a big busi
ness woman who hentis an automo
bile m anu fac hiring plant. She is as
ruthless In love as in hor financial
dealings, for she carelessly casts the
young men aside ns soon as she tires
of them and they try to carry the
courtship Into the office.
As Alison Drake, the business execu
tive, she feels that she is a super
woman who Is not bound by the ordi
nary conventions of the world about
her. It is not until she discovers
there Is one man who will not buc-
cumb to her wiles that she wakes up
to the fact that her slant on life is
a twisted one. Not in a long while
has Ruth Chatterton offered so pow
erful a portrayal and so moving a
drama.
