Fern Valley
Specimen! of the black widow, or
hour-glass cplder, some of which ire
exceedingly venomoua, . have been
found In Med ford and locality re
cently, according to reports made by
several people. The scientific name
for the small bug Is Latrodectus m ac
ta ns, which means "the pay you re
ceive kills," according to E. M. Hus-
song biology instructor at Medford
high school.
Moat of the spiders, he said, are
slightly poisonous, and make a small
red spot on the person bitten. A bite
may result in great pain, or even
death.
Mr. Russong stated that the most
common poisonous species In Oregon
and California Is medium-sized, about
an Inch In spread of legs, black and
eh In y as if varnished and the fe
males have a red hour-glass mark
ing on tho under side of the large
body part, the abdomen.
Tour of these have been taken to
the biology class in the high school
by Chester Pitch and Flora Miller,
found In Medford and vicinity. The
spiders are located under boards, logs,
masses of weeds, - stones, and other
such debris. Mr. Hussong says that
occasionally, although rarely, they are
found In houses and barns.
Bobby-Johnston and Charles Braley,
both pupils at the Valley school,
found three of the spiders near the
Miller residence, 171 1 Siskiyou
Heights, and also In the woodpile at
the school.
The bite of this spider has caused
several deaths In California, Mr. Hus
song pointed out.
