MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SEASON GETS UNDERWAY
The sawmill unit of tha Owen

ration this week, and la now run
ning on an eight-hour day. under the
NRA lumber code. Employment la
furnished by the company to cloae
to 300 men the largeat number to be
employed by the organisation alnce

The first train of logs from the
logging campa of the company In the
Butte Falli district la acheduled to
be hauled the end of the wee. Re
palra to the treatlea and track of the
Mcdford Logging company are com
pleted and the logging crew haa a
aupply on hand.
Present operations of the sawmill
are on about a million feet of logs In
the mill pond. '
At present 78 men are employed
In the Butte Falls district logging
camps, and the balance In the- other
departments of the plant.
Starting of the sawmill lessens the
labor tension In this county and la
another chapter In the improving
conditions. All the mill employocs
are former workers and realdenta of
this city and county.
The sawmill operatlona are contin
gent upon lumber market conditions,
now brightening.

contested, are schoduled to be heard
Friday morning before Circuit Judge
H. D. Norton.
Jantser. the evidence shows, pur
chased the timber claim on a delin
quent tax certificate from the county
for the amount of the taxes, approxi
mately 131. Wataon homesteaded the
land. Jantzer purchased it, among
other tracts, for his sawmill opera
tions. Watson, through counsel, contested
the sale, proferred the amount of the
taxes, and attacked the validity of the
sale.
Jantser Is represented by Attorney
P. J. Newman; Watson by George M.
Roberta and William M. McAllister.

Sixty day sentences In the county
Jail were meted yeaterday by Justice
of the Peace William R. Coleman to
R. R. Vorhels, 47, and Marjorle Kim
ball, 33, for theft of three woolen
blankets, a coffee percolator and oth
er articles from the Merrick Motor
Inn. The pair originally from Chi
cago, came here from Texas, Vorhela
acted aa his own lawyer.
The couple are aald by authorities
to have planned an auto endurance
exhibition here, with the woman at
the wheel. It la alleged they collect
ed about aso from local merchants,
on the proposition before It collapsed.
Anna Quackenbush. residing near
thla city, entered a plea of guilty to
having no operatora license and was
fined 18 and cost In Justice court.
Milton DeUos O'Neill of Klsmath
Falls, charged with speeding a truck,
and James H. Seabrooko charged with
having no license platea on a trailer,
were each assessed 5 and coata on
pleas of guilty.
John Seward, charged with tipsy
driving, entered a plea of not guilty
and hla hearing was set tor Friday
morning at 10 o'clock.

ber office. Miss Beeson has accepted
a position with the newly formed
Jackson county chamber of com
merce, the work to begin early in
May.

eight months of which she has served

FINANCIAL PLANS
Frank Hull was today guest of the
Lions club at its regular meeting
held In the Colonial club, and gave a
comprehensive outline of the finan
cial plans for the Oregon Diamond
Jubilee w,hlch la being underwritten
today and tomorrow.
There will be 12.000 seats arranged
for the pageant, "Oyer-Un-Gon." be
ing produced under the direction of
Angus Bowmer of the Southern Ore
gon Normal school, and a portion of i
the reveuue for the state-wide obser
vance Is expected to come from this
source, he pointed out.
Lion Larry Pennington read an In
vitation from the Eugene Lion's club,
host for the state Lions convention
early in June for the Medford Glee
men to participate In the concert at
McArthur'a court on the University
of Oregon campus June 3.
Also as a part of the program,
three cubs, Robert Skinner, A. C.
Walker and Leland Knox were Initi
ated Into the . local organization, and
Lion Pennington read to them the
accomplishments of. the club, and
gave each a. copy of the Constitution,
Ita by-laws and the code of ethics.
Through a motion introduced by
Lon B. Q. Harding, Ted Gillenwatcra
of Klamath Falls was endorsed by
the Medford club for the position of
district governor, to be elected at the
Lions state convention.
Captain R. G. Durham of the Sal
vation Army was a guest, and an
nounced the benefit concert to be
presented Friday evening at the Bap
tist church by the combined choirs
of the Medford churches. Also a
guest at today's meeting waa Jack
Fitzgerald, of the Rogue River Na
tional forest service offices.
