V NEW YORK, April 13. (AP) Life
looked brighter today for three or
four children suffering from rare dis
eases but for one of them, at least,
the respite was only temporary.
Beven-year-old Benny Hcndrlck,
whose muscles are slowly turning to
bone, was back bomo near Wilkes
Barre, Pa., and neighbors said they
saw him playing yesterday In the
rain.
Benny spent six weeks In a hos
pital where doctors worked In vain
to correct a glandular disturbance
that Is producing an over-supply of
calcium, bone making chemical, In
his body. As he played by the side
of his widowed mother's cottage he
seemed to be enjoying himself, neigh
bors said, despite limited movement
due to his stiffening body tissues.
Little air I Has Respite
Of three little 4-year-old girls suf
fering from Lukemla, a condition
that results In elimination of the
red corpuscles from the bloodstream,
Roma Garrett, at an East View, N.
T., hospital had a fine day yester
day. If she Aoped to get well, however,
she was doomed to disappointment,
according to physicians. The leth-
argy results from the disease was
akin to death Monday when a blood I
transfusion was given. .Roma rallied, i
delighted In new found strength.
Yesterday she also felt well until
late ofternoon.
The blood transfusion was not
given as a treatment, physicians said.
It was given when hope had been
abandoned and only to keep the
child alive a little longer. She will
tire a little earlier today, even ear
lier tomorrow, the doctors said. And
there will come the time when even
blood transfusions will not rouse her.
T,here was not much change In the
condition of the other two little
girls.

blo-chemlat Is treating her with a
liquid diet and says he can oure
her. Doctors at a Memphis hospital
where X-ray treatments were recent
ly stopped, say she can not recover.
Theodora Aloslo, at Christ hospital,
jersey city, is in a serious" condi
tion, and .has shown no change In
the past few days. Her case Is far
advanced. Her dolls lie unnoticed
on the foot of her bed. She is ut

CHICAGO, April 13 AP) Physic
ians at the Cook county children's
hospital are fighting to save 14-year-old
Oenevleve Lisa from a rare dis
ease which la causing her skin to
mummify.
Alresdy the tissue beneath the skin
of her face haa virtually disappeared
and the skin Is drawn taut across the
bones.
Scientists call the ailment from
which Oenevleve has been suffering
since she waa a year old, "Sclero
derma with Calcinosis." They explain
that this menna Increased deposits
of calcium, or chalk being laid under
her skin, which Itself Is atrophying.
They are uncertain as to the cause,
but believe that It may be caused by
a decreased activity of the parathy
roid glands.
Chalk deposits aome of them a
