Garner Denies
Retirement Plan
WASHINGTON, March 30. (AP)-
Vlce-President Garner today denied
published reports that he Intended
retiring from public life at the end of
his present term.
"I have made no such announce
ment," he said.
The time to apply the calyx spray
on pear and apple trees for the con
trol of codling moth worms will soon
be at hand, according to L. Q. Gent
ner of the Southern Oregon experi
ment station, -and L. P. Wilcox, coun
ty agent.
In case of apples this spray should
be applied when about 80 to 85 per
cent of the flower petals have fallen
and before the calyx cups close. The
object of this spray Is to fill the
blossom end of Vie young fruit with
poison so that worms trying to enter
Vie fruit at that point later in the
season will be killed.
The calyx spray on apples Is of
great importance and should be ap
plied at the proper time. The calyx
cups close within a week after the
fall of flower petals and when once
closed no amount of spraying will
protect the blossom end from worm
entries.
In pear orchards where worms have
been a serious problem a calyx spray
Is advisable and recommended, espe
cially on the Bnrtlett variety. This
spray should go on within the next
week as young fruits are now formed
and growing rapidly. The applica
tion of sprays at this time will also
prevent damage from such leaf and
fruit eating insects as saw fly larvae,
fruit worms and canker worms.
In the above sprays use powdered
arsenate of lead to the rate of three
pounds to the one hundred gallons
of water. Apply thoroughly and. strive
to fin the blossom ends of all young
fruits.
