FEDERAL PAYROLL
PASSAGE OF LAW
Increased pay (or federal employee,
as provided In the bill pused Wed
nesday night when the senate over
rode the president'! veto, will bring
higher payroll Into Medford,
through several channel, operated by
the federal government, survey dis
closes. Included In the government posi
tions here, and for which payrolls
are made from Medford are the army
officers and enlisted men who are
on duty with the Civilian Conserva
tion corps, the Rogue River national
forest employes, the Crater J,ake Na
tional park employes, postal employes.
Internal revenue men, deputy United
States marshal, federal engineer, and
the weather bureau employes.
Superintendent B. c. Bollnaky of
national park, stated that the five
per cent Increase, retroactive to Feb
ruary 1, and continuing to June 30,
would enlarge the payroll for the
park $413. With the pay -Increase
rising to 10 per cent July 1, the
coming fiscal year will show a total
of approximately $3500 added to the
park payroll.
Officials at the forestry office etated
that the payroll going out of that de
partment, before the IS per cent cut
was made In the economy program,
reached 113,000 monthly, and In the
summer time, was approximately $20,
000. The return of a portion of the
cut, la expected to bring the figures
mudh closer to the original pay.

Ladles of the Extension club are
practicing regularly In preparation
for their leoond annual vaudeville,
to be presented at the Wlmer Orange
hall Saturday night, under direction
of Mrs, Nola Aune. A well balanced
program Is planned, which includes
solos, monologues, music, readings,
group numbers and a one-act skit.
This club Is one of the largest and
most active extension clubs in the
county, as Is expressed In their club
song, written by Lawrence Johnson,
husband of one of the members.. The
song will be given for the first time
at the program.
Those taking part Include Dorothy
Steward, chairman; Ireta Jackson,
vice-chairman: Nola Aune. Tny
Ragsdale, LeNeva Ralston. Ruth Le
Molne, Ruby Hougham, Freda John
son, Col lata Johnson. Betty Hlllls,

Following tho entertainment, danc
ing will be enjoyed with pie and
coffee served at midnight. Proceeds
of the affair will be used to pf.y for
a curtain for the stage at the Evans
Valley school.

One of the miracles of spring la
the appearance of strawberries on
the market almost before the snow
Is off the ground.
Not the "frozen
fres,h" product,
which la delicious
Indeed, but the
honest - to-goodness
fresh garden
berries. And oh,
how good they
aret enpeclnlly in
shortcake.
Now there are
shortcakes and
s.hortoakes.
It hardly seems
believable that there Is a housewife
In our midst who doesn't know Just
how to make a real shortcake but
now and then we find the strangest
combinations called shortcake and
we are almost perturbed at the in
justice of auc.h an imposition. For
instance, no sweet onke served with
strawberries should be oalled short
cake, any more than a strawberry
sundae should be labeled "shortcake,"
Here are shortenkes to please the
taste of an epicure:
Genuine ShortcaKe
3 cups flour.
1 teaspoon salt,
4 teaspoons baking powder.
3 tablespoons sugar.
6 tablPHpoons shortening.
H cup milk.
Sift dry ingredients together, cut
la shortening with pastry blender
t.Men add milk slowly and mix gently
until a soft dough forms. Roll Just
a little. Spread ono-half In a well
greased eight-Inch layer cake pan
and brush lightly with butter. Cover
with the remaining dough and bake
at 450 degrees for 10 minutes. To
serve, spread with crushed and sweet
ened frut between the layers. Cover
wltVi mora berries and top with
whipped cream or serve with coffee
cream.
Rhuba.b flhortrake
4 cups rhubarb, cut In one-Inch
pieces.
3 curxi sugar.
Cook thn rhubarb and sugar In top
of double boiler or In similar water-
lets method and use for filling.
Sprinkle with nutmeg.
rinrtipple .shortcake
2 cups of crushed pineapple.
H cup sugar.
Cook the pi nr apple and sutrar to
gether for 15 minutes then cool and
use for tilling.
Ornnge Shortcake
4 cups of orange pulp cut In
small pieces,
l'i cup sugar.
Cover with sugar and allow to
stand at least one hour. Use as fill
ing. Del mo nl co Short rake
3 oupa crushed strawberries then
sweeten to taste.
3 cups sliced bananas.
Combine the two fruits when ready
to serve and use for filling.
Hawaiian Shortcake
9 cups crushed pineapple.
1 cup sliced bananas.
3 tablespoons lemon Juice.
Combine and let stand at least one
hour before using as filling.
Pear Shortcake
3 cups canned pears cut In cubes.
cup white cherries.
Va cup marlschlno cherries.
Combine cubes of canned pears
and halved cherrlea and sweeten to
taste, add lemon Juice If desired. Let
stand one-half hour before using.

Fifty years of Chrutlan Endeavor
in Oregon will be celebrated at the
Golden Jubilee atate convention to
be held In Salem, April -10 to 32.
Present Indications point to the larg
est convention in Oregon Endeavor
history rs nearly 700 registrations
have already been received by the
state office. Tillamook, Grande
Ronde, Myrtle, Klamath -Lake, Yam
hill, Mount Hood, Polk and Douglas
unions have already reached their
registration goals, and other unions
are closo to theirs.
Dr. Daniel A. Poling, a native Ore
gonlan, and now president of the
International Society of Christian
Endeavor and of the world's Chris
tian Endeavor Union, will be guest
speaker on Saturday and Sunday.
Other speakers incluude Rev. Milton
S. Weber of Eugene, Rev. Kendall
E. Burke of Dallaa, Rev Paul Petti
cord of Corvallls, and Dr, Raymond
B. Walker of Portland.
Noted Christian Endeavor leaders
will conduct conferences on Chris
tian Endeavor methods and the
"Witnessing for Christ" program.
Plana are under way for a reunion
tea for all Endeavorers who have at
tended an International convention,
a parade of convention delegates, a
pastors' luncheon, an Oregon C. E.
historical display, and several ban
quets. There will be a young peo
ple's oratorical contest, an Interme
diate dramatization contest, and pos
ter, and "winning news story" con
tests as features.

BUCHAREST, Rumania, March 30.
Terrified crowds poured into tho
streets from theaters, restaurants and
homes tonight when two prolonged
earthshocks were felt throughout the
city.
Windows were broken and pictures
were shaken from walls by the
shocks, the worst experienced here
within recent memory.
First reports were that no on was
hurt or killed.

Civilian Conservation corpa campa In
tha Medford district South Fork of
the Rogue, Rand Ranger atatlon, and
Camp Sebastian, also 139 men from
the Eugene CCC district leave Med
ford this evening on a apeclal train,
en route to Fort Sheridan, in., where
they will be discharged. The men
making the trip are those who did
not re-enroll for the coming period.
Captain S. Gordon Hyde. Inf.-Rea.,
of the Eugene district, will act as
train commander, while Second Lieu
tenant Edward K. Baer. Engr.-Res., Of
this district will be mess officer. First
Lieutenant L. B. Hanson, Med.-Ree.,
also out of the Eugene district, has
been designated aa train medical of
ficer. Ordera out of district head
quarters slso state. Captain Jack Drew,
FA-Rea., will slso accompany tne
train.
Eighty-nine enrollea from the South
Fork of the Rogue camp will be leav
ing, 70 from Rand Ranger station
camp, and 33 from the Capo Sebastian
camp on the coast. Men were sched
uled to arrive here between neon and
3 p. m. today from their camps.
Enrolles from the Eugene district
will arrive In their cars on the Shasta
this evening, and according t? orders,
the train Is due out 'of Medford at
6:30 tonight.
Jacob Moss arrived hero on the
Oregonlan today from Portland to
take charge of fixing the diner for
the apeclal train. The Eugene men
will be In cara Hamelln, Alepho,
Lyken and Strelltao. while the Med
ford district men will travel In cars
Eldelon, Rudysrd, Rochelle and Mil
brook. Itinerary announced here shows the
tratn will arrive at Ogden, Utah, at
6 a. m., April 1, at Omaha. Neb., at
10:30 a. m., April 3, at Chicago at
3 a. m April 3, and at Fort Sheridan,
III., at 5 a. m., the same date.
