MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, MARCH 23. 1934.

BE
IN CAGE TOURNEY
There Is a possibility that two
southern Oregon high school basket
ball squads will battle In the finals!
of the state tournament at Salem
Saturday night. Ashland plays As-1
toria and Klamath Falls plays Prank-'
lin high of Portland tonight In the
semi-finals. Local Interest In to-
' night's contests is keen, with the
fans pulling strongest for Ashland
.a traditional rival of many years
but it would not hurt the feelinga
of local basketball followers if Klam
ath Falls, also a keen athltlc rival,
should emerge victorious.
If both squads should reacA the
finals of the state classic, it would
be a high testimonial to the brand
or basketball coached and played in
southern Oregon conferences.
Astoria high, favored to win the
tournament, was known in past years
, as "Medford's friend at Salem." As
toria players and lans always cheer
ed for Vie "Calllson teams." In
1938, when Medford won Its last state
title, Salem fans and players booed
lustily, Astoria was there with the
good will. That year Medford de
feted Astoria in the title game, 35
to 16. The Fishermen, as usual, have
an Impressive record this year. The
elimination of Salem last night from
the championship round caused no
tears in this city. '
Ashland was defeated three times
by Klamath Falls, by narrow margins,
after taking the first of a four-game
series. Klamath Falls defeated Med
ford 's erratic squad twice the last
time by one point. Medford and Ash
land each won a game and Medford
forfeited the third game.
Astoria, with a big, fast squad, won
Its first game with a' lop-sided score
and Its second by two points over
The Dalles. Ashland won Its first
game by three points and Its second
by 18 points. Klamath Falls defeat
ed Silverton and Eugene, by five
' points each, to enter the semi-finals.
