Fierce Arabs are believed by Andre
Malraux, French explorer, to be
guarding the secrets of the rich lost
metropolis of the Queen of Sheba's
reign against modern exploration.
mairaux, who with his pilot. Cap- i
tain Cornlgllon Mollnier, returned
here yesterday. Is sure they found
the "Paris" of the glamorous Sheba
in a cluster of ruined towers and
temples on the southwestern edge of
the Ruba-el-Khall desert, which he
Identified as the city of Nalth.
Treasure Possibility
The possibility that immensely val-!
uable archaeological treasures In-!
eluding the tombs of the queen and.
her dynasty He burled In tlw sandy)
waste is seen by Malraux, author and i
archaeologist.
"The Arab nomads who fired upon
our plane when we flew over the city
must be driven off, however, before
exploration will be possible," Mal
raux said.
"Further research must await Brit
ish pacification of the region. -
"Until the desert is explored the
exact location of the dead city can
not be fixed," said Malraux, adding:
"We were unable to take the longi
tude and latitude of the spot wftlch
we reached after five hours of flying
almost due north from Djibouti, in
French SomalUand."
( In their report on the flight
March 8 to the French air ministry,
the airmen indicated the city was
about 1,000 miles southeast of Jeru
salem. They had headquarters at
Djibouti).
"Explorers could mark the spot ex
actly," Malraux went on, "by meas
uring the number of miles from &
given starting point."
Believed Real Metropolis
The size of the cemetery convinced
Malraux he had found Sheba's real
metropolis.
"Sheba seemed to have three pro
vinces," he said. "Mareb, previously
believed to be the capital of all the
great queen's territory, was merely
the provincial capital, t believe, like
Mein another known city.
"Their cemeteries are only about
a quarter of a mile long, while that
of the newly discovered city is a
mile and a quarter long.
"This leads me to believe that
Nalth was the capital of the kingdom."
Malraux said the city itself was
three miles long and about half as
wide.
Photos Show Ruins
Exhibiting photographs taken at a
height of a thousand feet over the
legendary city, Malraux pointed out
20 temples and towers whose wlndow-
less walls and set-back architecture
like modern skyscrapers rising above
the lower houses further convinced
him the city dates to the time of
the famous queen.
The city, he said, is surrounded by
the ruins of a double wall outside

Madame, you've undoubtedly already dis
covered that you can't pick quality by
the prettines9 of the package. Hills Bros.
Coffee has maintained its quality. As a
result, more people from Chicago to the
Pacific buy Hills Bros. Coffee than any
other brand. Hills Bros. Coffee may cost
you a few cents more per pound. But
you don't drink coffee by the pound. You
drink it by the cup. Because the flavor is
more abundant, Hills Bros. Coffee is ac
tually more, economical to use than "bar

have been a great clearing center for
camel caravans bearing goods of an
cient Indians from the oast of the
Arabian sea to Jerusalem. He sug
gested that the queen's visit to Solo
mon, as described In the Bible, may
have been for an economic confer
ence after her prime minister failed
to make a trade agreement, for there
was evidence that Jews later became
more prominent In Sheba's commerce.
Fan to tie Vision
Captain Molluler, adding his Im
pressions to their discussions of the
hazardous flight, declared: "It was
a fantAstlo vision," aa he described
the magnificent white marble city
over which they flew In the depths
of the trackless desert of Arabia on
March 8.
Both said they were moved deeply
when they first glimpsed the city's
majestic towers and temples still
standing a city sought for centu
ries. "We left Djibouti (French Soma
lUand, where they established a
base), crossed the Red sea and flew
over Yemen. We encountered a sand
storm that raged five and one-half
hours, but nevertheless continued,'
Captain Mollnier related.
"Soon we saw thousands of tombs
that dot the Valley of Kings. Fin
ally, at the edge of the great Ruba-el-Khalt
desert, an extraordinary
white city loomed up on the dark
heights streaked with ancient Lcreams
of lava.
"We were above tin, city of the
Queen of Sheba a storied capital
abandoned centuries ago and prob
ably visited only from time to time
by wandering Bedouins, some of
whom we saw.
"These Bedouins gave us a bad re
ception. We were greeted with rifle
shots. There could be no thought
of landing. Besides, the ground was
rough and It would have been Im
possible for an airplane to alight.
"Our flight lasted nine hours."
