Held In Jail Arrested on charges
of being drunk in a public place, John
Wilson, 54, of Galls Creek, was lodged

is now effective, H. J. Merchant, dis
trict traffic manager of United Air
Lines, announced today.
Passengers leaving Medford at noon
arrive In San Diego in the evening,
and depart from that city the next

Mtclford Junior high competed with
Ashland Junior ht&h In two debates i
on Friday, March 16. The question ,
was, "Resolved, that the United States ;
Should Adopt the Essential Features
of the British System of Radio Con
trol."
The first debat waa held at the
local Junior high. Tha affirmative
waa from Ashland. The team was
composed of Ellen Waltermlre and
Francis Port, and was accompanied
by the principal, Miss Myers. The
negative was upheld by the Medford
team, Virginia Hammond and Rich
ard Thterolf. Tho Judge. Rev. Joseph
Knott s, declared the negative win
ners. The other rei ate was held in the
Ashland junior high. The Medford
affirmative team, Billy Wilson and
Shirley Tuttle, was accompanied by
the coach, Mrs. Guy Young. The
Ashland negative team waa compos
ed of Jack Parsons and Charlotte
Walters. The Judge, Mr. Fuller, award
ed the decision to Vie' negative.
This ends debating for the local
ninth grade team for this year.
Grants Pass Junior high school de
baters defeated the Medford Junior
high school Thursday evening, argu
ing the negative of the subject: "Re
solved that the United States Should
Adopt the Essential Features of the
British System of Radio Regulation
and Control."

Hartzell represented Medford. Miss
Annette Grey is the local coach.
Medford was victorious in the de
bate conducted here Thursday with

Pass.
Young people of Jackson county
are looking forward to the conven

church here Friday, March 23, spon

School association.- The theme for
the meet will be ."Youth Spiritual
Leadership Training."
The meeting will start at 4 p. m.
Friday with a study group for adults
lead by Dr. W. I. Van Nuys of Port
land. At 8:30 the ladles of the Pres
byterian church will eerve dinner to
those attending the convention. After
dinner there will be five study classes
which will take up various topics re
lating to youth training in the Sun
day school and church today.
It Is hoped that every church in
Jackson county will have five dele
gates so they can have a representa
tive in each of the classes. Each class
will have a minister to supervise the
study.
The climax of the convention will
be the main address of the evening,
which will tie In with the coming
Easter programs of the churches.

Dr. Francis Preston Venable, noted
chemist and president of the Univer
sity of North Carolina from 1000 to
1914, died here today of pneumonia.
He was 77 years old.

Clark Arrives In
City To Open New
Insurance Office
Mr. and Mrs. Lei and Clark moved
to Medford during the past week and
expect to make this their permanent
nome. They played In the northwest
bridge tournament recently held in
Portland and were one of the eight
couples to reach the finals. Mr. Clark
will have charge of the business of
the Oregon Mutual Fire Insurance
company for Medford and Jackson
county.
The company Is now entering Its
40th year and according to Mr. Clark
they recently added S25.000 to their
already larp.e surplus account. This
was made possible by the large volume
of business during January, Febru
