Chapter 36
JUNGLE AGAIN
IF ONLY ha could retain con
sciousness a little while longer!
Vaguely he knew that an alrpl e
flying at normal apeed could travel
In a minute almost the distance one
could travel In a day's beating
through heat-laden Jungle. Just a
halt hour more he wanted. His sight
grew dimmer. Just a few minutes
Jonger, he prayed. He must get the
ship to the coast. The beach, he
knew, was one long landing field.
Through bleared eyes he ob
served that the Jungle thickness be
low was spotted with many savan
nahs. Again he tried for altitude,
hut his muscles refused to supply
strength sufficient to haul back the
stick.
Then ahead ot him, abruptly, be
saw tree tops. A cloak of darkness
obscured bis sight tor an Instant.
When his vision cleared he felt the
upper branches slap against the
landing gear.
Savagely be fought the controls.
The effort sent blinding pains
through his brain. He was conscious
ot a great crashing noise.
Eons later. It seemed, he dreamed
that he was struggling through In
calculable Jungles. It was very real
to him. The smells ot rotting vege
tation were bitter In his nostrils.
Trees and brush weaved Ilka un
realistic phantoms before bis eyes.
From time to time a variety ot
tastes spread over his palate, as If
be had eaten of Jungle fruits; twice
his brain dwelt In dull wonder that
water could taste so sweet even In
a dream.
His body felt as though It were
encased within hot metal. When
that nightmare became too painful
to endure, all his senses became
blank again. After a period ot time
the dreams would recur.
When finally be awakened, It
eemod that be had been sleeping
forever. The air about blm was cool
and gracious. He opened his eyes,
He was lying In a palm clump.
He saw the trooping fronds above,
outlined against a sky brilliant with
atara. Memory swooped upon his
consciousness like a great and evil
bird. He struggled to a sitting post'
tlon. A small Ore burned nearby.
"Janice!" be cried. "Janlcol"
"What Is It Frank?"
She stood before blm. The Ore-
light Illumined her. He stared In
amazement. He trim costume was
stained and torn, her laced boots
were cut to tatters.
He observed tbat her face seemed
thinner of contour, and the skin was
pink and peeling as If It had been
blistered. At first he thought she
, was wearing gloves but a closer
glance showed him tbat her bands
were bound with white strips ot
cloth.
"Where's the plane!" be asked.
"What happened t We crashed, 1
know. ..."
She looked at blm with an ex
presslon ot puulemenL
"Ot course," she answered. "This
morning." Her t-.ce lighted with
dawning understanding. "You were
delirious. The sblp went down In
a savannah. It rolled awhile over
the open until the ground became
swampy, it struck something and
went over on Its nose, and then
righted Itself. It sank to the lower
wings. It started to burn Just a
little at first, then very fiercely.
"V00 " there holding to the con-
trol as If you were made of
wood. Your eyes were wide open.
I thought for a horrible Instant tbat
, . . that. . . ."
"1 know," said Frank softly
"Qo on.
"There was one ot those big
knives the natives use. In a leather
case, strapped beside the Ore ex
tinguisher. 1 cut the belt tbat
trapped you In. The buckle was
twisted and I couldn't loosen It, The
flames reached you. You began to
move then, I tell you." She smiled
wanly.
"I bad to leave the rifle: It was
too heavy. knew we had to get
away trora there. I thought the
moke fiom the burning plane
might bring those natives after as.
She ihuddered a little. Her eyes
tilled with tears, and she dropped
to ner knees beside him.
"Poor Horatio Oreene, and that
little Mexican boy!" She wept
quite openly now, and Frank tbrew
his arm over the slim shoulders In
a clumsy attempt to soothe her. His
own throat war tight.

GODDESS
by Herbert Jensen
She pressed her bandaged hands
against ber eyes.
At the time I couldn't under
stand you. You staggered through
the Jungle In a daze, striking at the
creepers. Sometimes you wouid fall,
and lay as If you would never get
up. But yon did. 1
'Once you tell In a poorer water.
I got you out Your face was cov
ered with slimy things that wig
gled. I brushed them all off and
fished In the pool for the knife you
lost" 1
Frank glanced at ber bands. I
"No," she said, anticipating his
question. "They were blistered from
the knife. After a while you didn't:
chop at the vines any more, but1
would Just crash at them wltb your
body. So I walked ahead and
chopped."
- "You did that?" Orahame's vole
was, Incredulous.
The girl nodded and hurried on.
"It wasn't so bad. This afternoon.
when 1 thought 1 couldn't fight the
creepers another minute, we
stumbled on an old road that
seemed to lead In the direction we
wanted to go. It was like a con
crete road at home, only the stone
blocks were smaller."
"I've beard of them," said Frank.
"The old Mayas built tbem. Usual
ly, though, they've been swallowed
by the Jungle."
'This one was a godsend. We fol
lowed It until dark. Then It
stopped. Just like tbat." She made
a downward gesture with her arm.
"IT WAS like walking oft an open
' bridge. I stepped out and my
toot touched nothing. 1 tell 1 don't
know how tar 1 tell Into some
brush and rolled out of It down a
slope. I think I screamed, but you
didn't bear me.
"1 was shaken, but not much hurt,
1 think. I called to yon but yon
didn't answer. 1 thought 1 waa In
some kind of a well, and you bad
walked on, missing It
"1 was really terrified then." She
smiled a little apologetically. "1
think 1 waa too frightened to call
to you. I sat there 1 don't know
tor how long. Then the moon came
up. . . .
"You were lying Just a little way
from me. Your face was terribly
scratched. . . .
"There were matches In youz
coat I made this Are. There were
clouds ot mosquitoes." A tear glis
tened on her cheek and tell. "I don't
know where we are. We're lost,
Frank! Do you think there's any
chance. ..."
She wept tlrndly. Frank tight
ened the rm aoross her shoulders
wltb awkward reassurance. Sh
rested ber cheek against his shoul
der. It seemed that she tell asleep
In that Instant He held her thus
tor an hour, staring somberly at the
fire's glow.
Curiously he thought of Spin
Wlnslow's remark made weeks or
was It years? before. Janice Kent
he bad said wltb his characteristic
cynicism, ru whalebone and
gristle under her soft exterior.
But he hadn't meant that she
could stand this hardship. The
routine of tht studios, however ex
acting, bad at the day's end warm
baths, massage and proper food.
Hore no one knew better than
Frank Orahame the privations ol
the Jungle would be brutally swift
and murderous.
The rifle was gone. He discov
ered In a glsnce tbat his pistol was
not In thr holster. There was
sagging w light In his coat pocket
ammunition but worthless without
the gun.
They had the machete, but that '
was little use as a food-getter. It
would serve to hack a trail through
the Jungle; that was all.
How tar they were from the coast
be bed no Idea whatsoever. Dis
tances In the Jungle are not com
puted In miles but In days of travel.
They bad no food no means to pro
vide themselves with food. Water,
even, might prove to be a problem.
They must depend upon the after
noon rain, or else drink the brack
ish and germ-thickened water from
the swamps they might pass. Fur
thermore a casual wound, the small
mishap ol a thorn scratch might
become Infected and prove more
deadly than snake bite.
As he watched the tire dwindled.
Mosquitoes tang eloser. A slight
sound In the s'irrounding darkness
made him realise tbat Jaguars were
ferocious cats and might be lurking
about
Oently he allowed the limp form
of his companion to rest upon the
ground. Ha took oft his coat and
covered with It the upper part ot
her body. He threw fresb fuel upon
the Are, tlng care that some ot
It was green.
