LOS ANGKLES. Cel.. Feb. 15. At the Hotel Biltmrfre the
othor night a group of prominent Los Angeles business men had
a banquet. On the wall was a chart a graph one line repre
senting the decline in prosperity, another line the increase in
the federal income tax. The more the income tax increased the
more prosperity declined. Ergo, decrease the income tax and
restore prosperity. Simple, isn't it very simple l so simpie

Yet the men at the banquet seemed to swallow it, along t 1111
the filet mignon and the grape fruit avacado salad, for a reso
lution was adopted opposing a state income tax in Lauiornia
(this state has never passed one) and a reduction of tne lccierai

Hearst's Los Angeles Examiner played up the action on the
front page the following morning, supported by a commenda
tory editorial.
Needless to say the Mail Tribune is or a state sales tax in
Oregon it is the only escape from a wholesale closing of public
schools, and general financial collapse. But we DON'T favor
and never have favored, repeal of the state income tax, 01
radical reduction in the federal tax on incomes. The best and
fairest tax of all is an income tax. Only when incomes have
fallen to a point where increases run into the law of diminish
ing returns, do we favor a sales tax, not as a substitute for
income taxes, but complementary to them-a necessary expedi
ent to get the money for essential public expenses and preserve
the tax structure.
Here in California apparently they have a different idea.

business men, brought home to the present writer the fact that
anti-Roosevelt sentiment is growing rapidly. Many months ago
we Tiredictcd the time would soon come, when the sheep would
have to be separated from the goats, when those who honestly
believe in a New Deal for this country-and a real one-must be
put on one side; and those who don't believe in it, but have
given lip service because it was the popular thing to do must
That time is close at hand now, if it hasn't actually nmved.
And unless wo are greatly mistaken, this drastic action of the
Roosevelt administration regarding air mail contracts, ,will
greatly hasten the process. . -
All the facts regarding this airmail crisis, are not known at
this writing, but it is fairly clear, that the underlying issue be

ing, what is generally known as Big Business really took over
the control of this great and growing industry. Holding com
panies were formed, stocks were watered, the "old army game
was played, as usual, with huge profits for a few smart insiders
while the public as a whole held the sack. Perhaps the higher
ups were not crooks, are not criminally liablethat is yet to be
divulged-but from the standpoint of the Roosevelt aclm.nistr.i

handed over to the army.
