221 AGE PENSION
APPLICANTS FILE
Up to this morning 231 applica
tions for old age pensions have been
filed with the county court, and the
past week there nas been a decline
In the number applying, it 1b esti
mated that the final number will
be close to the 250 mark,
The county court, sitting as. the
pension commission, is expected to
make its first approvals by the end
of next week ana snordy thereafter
February payments of penslona will
, start. .
T,he amounts of allotments, under
the pensions, owing to the limited
funds of the county, will be below
the maximum allowance of 930 per
month. A recent ruling of the at
torney general held that the pension
should be paid, whether or not funds
were available. The budget commit
tee appropriated $5000 for the pur
pose. This will bo used first and,
w.hen exhausted, the county will have
to find another fund. Payment of
the old age pension is one of the
chief problems confronting the coun
ty court.-
The legislature In passing the old
age pension law made no provision
for providing funds. Recent state
and federal rulings have held that
no person receiving a pension shall
receive aid from other sources.
The law was framed to eventually
abolish the poor farm and centralize
funds for relief. In California, at
the present time, excess monies from
ales tax receipts are being used to
pay the old age pension In that
' state the minimum residence is 30
years, Instead of 18 years as the
Oregon law provides.
A number of local applicants have
lived in the state and county all
their lives. Others have moved to
this county within the past two years
after Jong previous residences in oth
er counties. In several instances the
applicant, though residing here, will
receive pensions from other counties.
IN DAMAGE SUIT
An amended complaint has been
filed In the damage suit of Daisy
Grigsby against Frank Pasmore and
Lester Merrlman, doing business as
the "Merrlman Dairy." The plain
tiff seeks 9500 general damages, $7
for medical services, $34.41 for repair
of auto, and attorney fees.
The plaintiff alleges that as the
. result of an auto crash on Sixth
street, November 15 last, she was
thrown against the steering past of
jher sedan, sustained badly lacerated
knees, "severe shock, body bruises
which prevented her from working
for three weeks, great pain and ag
ony, disorders necessitating a major
operation" and "is permanently dis
abled." The complaint alleges that the ac
cident occurred when Pasmore at
tempted to turn his auto around in
the middle of the Block on West
Sixth street near the Junction with
Main.

Lee Tracy Appears
In Craterian Film
"Advice to the Lovelorn," which
ends Its engagement at the Craterian
theater tomorrow night, has brought
many laughs to the patrons of that
showhouse.
The wise-cracking Lee Tracy is seen
In the starring role, as a flip young
reporter on a Los Angeles dally, whose
propensity for hard liquor causes htm
to muff the biggest story of the year
by sleeping peacefully through an
earthquake.
As suitable punishment, his editor
demotes him to the humiliating post
of "agony" column conductor. Tracy
attempts to retaliate by giving the
wildest advice that ever appeared In
a newspaper column, witfl the result
that he brings down upon his head
the wrath of frantic mammas and
wronged ladles and gets himself em
broiled in several highly melodramatic
situations, some of which develop
comic and some, alas, highly tragic
consequences.
Pretty Sally Blane plays the sweet
heart for whose sweet sake Tracy tries
to worm his way out of the humiliat
ing Job.
A Mickey Mouse cartoon, a comedy,
novelty and newsreel round out the
program.
Former Multnomah
Official Suicides
PORTLAND, Feb. 9. (AP) Joseph
Bush, 69, former chief deputy county
clerk of Multnomah county, shot
himself to death at his home here
last night as he sat before a mirror.
The coroner's office said he left a
note to his widow. Bush had been
despondent over 111 health and lack
of employment, it was said.

Irene Morrow was released from
the county Jail about 5 o'clock
Thursday afternoon when she fur
nished. $1500 bond required by fed
eral authorities following her arraign
ment yesterday on charges of con
spiring with Ed Davis In violation
of the Mann act.
Davis Is being held In Jail In lieu
of $3000 bonds on charges of violat
ing the Mann act. He informed
Deputy United States Marshal O. C.
Wells last evening that he would be
unable to raise the amount.

companion, seized in Chicago a day
after Sankey.

occupied by Sankey. Alcorn also war
to have pleaded guilty today, but an
Inquest into Sankey's death may alter

that Sankey had not been completely
removed from the Lindbergh crime
picture. He maintained that a mys
terious telephone call to New Jersey,

This, together with notes and news
paper clippings on the case found on
the Sankey turkey ranch at Oann
Valley led Klnkesd to believe the
desperado might have been connected
with that case.
No notes were left by Ssnkey. who
apparently had contemplated suicide
last Saturday when he appeared
moody, depressed and morose. At
that time he paced nervously in his
cell, guards saia.
An hour before he was found dead
he appeared in good spirits and sought
to make arrangements to see his wife,
Mrs. Fern Sankey. held in the county
Jail in lieu of $35,000 bond, on a
charge of conspiracy to kidnap, as a
result of the Boettcher abduction.
Guard Finds Body.
The body of Sankey was found by
Frank Ollmore, one of his two guards.
When Ollmore returned from getting
a headache tablet for Alcorn. San
key's body dangled from the cell bar.
Sankey had confessed to both the
Boettcher and bohn kldnapings. Al
corn had admitted the Boettcher ab
duction. With Sankey's death, and
Alcorn's Imprisonment, all of the
gang behind the Boettcher seizure
have been brough to Justice. Three
