I have a launch there, at my haci

Belize where the United Fruit boats

Cuba. You have plenty of money?"
"Enough," sala Greene shortly.
Ortega shrugged. "1 would sug

you carry drafts 1 can arrange to

you." His glance appraised the dia

People moved restlessly about Janice.
"Oh, Quite," replied Ortega caau

. "Well." said Mr. Greene, "let's
get going."
They Bled out ot tbe car. Several
soldiers helped them with their
boxes. Ortega made arrangements
to bare them taken to an bote). Mr.
Greene admitted to Janice, rather
grudgingly, that Ortega certainly
eould get things done.
Janice did not reply. She was too
tired from the long day and the ex
citement to take much Interest In
what was going on about her. She
noted, however, that Ortega kept
close to her, ratber too close she
thought, but perhaps It waa only bis
leal to see that she waa made com
fortable. SHE stood waiting (or ber coach. It

tbe station. People moved restlessly
about her native women with

wbo whimpered, soldiers with stolid,
sullen faces, whose metallic equip
ment clinked and rattled as they
moved.
It waa then that abe observed the
man wbo leaned against a post in
the station entrance. Almost a pure
Indian type she thought, taking In
the dark skin, tbe beaked nose, and
wide cheek-bones. A shock of coarse
black hair fell over his forehead. He
seemed to be staring toward her,
yet not at ber.
She turned toward Ortega, wbo
was at her elbow. He was looking
directly at the Indian. Ortega nodded
his head. His Hps were parted In a
halt smile, which vanished aa he

Janice wondered. Then, as the

She assured herself that the alight
feeling of uneaslnesa tbat persisted
was due to ber fatigue, or her un

GRAHAME made a last slash with
bis machete and dropped It
among the tangle of Jungle creepers
at his feet. He drew tobacco and
papers from bis breast pocket, and
while rolling bis clgaret watched
the tolling figure beside blm. Sweat
glistened on Juan's bronze face, the
muscles rippled under his sblrt aa
be swung bis heavy knife.
"Let's cut back to the trail, ma-
chacbo." said Grabame.
Tbe lad paused doubtfully. "But
we may meet the men who come for
the arms," he replied.
"Almost," said Grahams, "It would
be better than this."
"Aa you say. I am willing." He
grimaced at bis blistered bands and
smiled. "It is better to die swiftly
with a bullet than to expire slowly
from too much work."
Grabame chuckled. "Spoken Ilka
a true son of Mexico."
"Nevertheless," be continued, "we
should be able to tell from the trail
whether they bave passed , toward
the baclenda or not. Also, they may
bave returned with the cases. In
that event, we can keep behind
them."
"Bueno," agreed Juan. "Good. The
trail lies three kilometers to the
south behind that email bill."
They were about forty kilometers
In from the coast. Roughly the di
rection of the trail was south-west,
They bad been nearly two weeks
Journeying to reach this point, keep
ing always off the main trail.
At times their way was easy,
when tbe Jungle opened Into broad
grassy savannahs. At other points
tboy were forced to plunge Into
leech-glutted bogs where every step
waa a supreme effort.
Tbey skirted tbe small bill tbat
Juan had noticed. Soon they stood
upon a narrow path that twisted
southward, a truly Indian trail that
looped and swung around trees and
swamp;, never ran straight.
Juan preceded Qrabame aa they
strode along. Their packs were
humped blgb upon tbelr shoulders.
Bach carried a rifle, taken from Or
tega's landed cases. Occasionally
Juan pointed to the right or left ot
the trail, calling Qrahame'a atten
tion to freshly aevered vines.
"They bave passed this way to
ward tbe coast 1 can not tell
whether they bave returned."
Tbey walked tor several hour.
The trail dipped toward a swamp,
and Grahams noticed tbat at the
point It crossed tbe bog, tree trunks
and branches had been thrown to
give a arm footing. Juan uttered aa
exclamation and hurried forward.
"I can tell you more now," said
the boy. "They are beblnd us. They
have not returned. 8ee The mud
Is trampled. The footprints go all
In one direction. A very large party
too. perhaps halt a hundred, per
haps more."
They stood at the edge of the
swamp that stretched about two
hundred yards ahead of them.
Thoughtfully they examined the
footprints. t
"It's the side trail again tor us,
son," i,ald Grahams. "At least until
the footing Is dry. It would be telling
era too much It we crossed here.
We don't know how tar they are be
hind us. If they see our prints here
they'd send a party ahead to catch
us."
