Late Prime Minister Wrote
Caustic Comment On Life
and Politics Wedding
Service Object of Scorn

LONDON (UP) A sensation has
been caused In English literary and
political circle by the publication of
the letters of a late, former prime
minister.
In 1915 H. H. Asquith, later to be
come Lord Oxford and Asquith, was
63 and premier of Great Britain. At
this time the statesman met Mrs.
Hilda Harrlseon, 27, and their friend
ship grew and lasted until Asqulth's
death.
During that period Asquith wrote
many letters to bis young friend.
Some of them appear In a recently
published volume, In which the re
cipient's name does not appear.
Indignation Aroused
Uncomplimentary references to per
sonages still living are made In some
of the letters, and it is this that has
aroused considerable Indignation over
their publication.
Perhaps the most flagrant example
of this la where the writer, referring
' to David Lloyd George, who succeed
ed him In the wartime premiership,
ays: "L. G. says that he had nothing
to do with It, and for once I believe
that he Is telling the truth."

major In the artillery who was killed
while (he letters were being written.
When her husband was killed, As
quith wrote:
"Dearest, I have Just hoard your
terrible news. It must have happened
while I was out there. That you of
til women should be called upon to
face this desolation of your life Is
to me all but unthinkable. My heart
bleeds for you, and I would give more
than I can tell to be able to put a
healing finger on your brow. Ever
your loving and devoted, H. H. A."
Son and Daughter Heirs
Out of the statesman's compara
tively meager estate of about (45,000
the sum of (13,600 was left to edu
cate Mrs. Harrlsson's son and daugh
ter. Asquith had some caustic com
mentaries to make in connection
with life and politics. Of women
voters, he said: "They are for the
moot part hopelessly Ignorant of poli
tics, credulous to the last degree, and
flickering with gusts of sentiment
like a candle In the'wlnd."
Of the labor party he wrote:
"They know as much about parlia
mentary politics as a hen does about
, utrology;" and In describing a fash
ionable wedding, he wrote:
"As X followed once more the fa
miliar service, I felt all the repulsion,
and more, that you described a
couple of weeks ago . . . the servile,
Insincere formulae except In the
mouths of people not yet grown up:
with a dreary, platitudinous elocfttlon
by a minor bishop; it filled me with
something like nausea."

question, "Resolved, that the United
States should adopt the essential fea
tures of the. British system of radio
control and operation."
A. O. Soderberg, new executive of
Crater Lake council Boy Scouts, out
lined the progress socompllshed In
scouting during the past 34 years.
He complimented the Actlvlans upon
the Berrydale troop No. 18, which the
club la sponsoring.
Mr. Soderberg and Dick laaacs were
bosh guests of the club at dinner.
