Old Rivalry Will Be Renewed
With Salem Basketeers
Tigers and St. Mary's
Play Preliminary Games
Medford Junior hltfh school will
como into Its own tn athletic tomcr
vow night, when they meet the Par
rim Junior high Mhool huketball
quintet of Salem, on the high school
floor In the first of a two-game series,
In. the local's principal encounter of
the season.
Parrish has always been Med ford's
most formidable opponents, but the
local boys look forward to playin?
them, for in addition to being real
Opposition, the Salem youngsters are
the best of sports, and relations es
tablished between the school several
years ago have been most pleasant.
Two years ago, on the local floor,
Med ford tied Parrtsh for state hon
on, winning the first game by two
points, arid losing the second In an
Overtime period by a similar score,
Last year t Salem, the Parrish
boys won both games, but it took an
overtime period to take the second
game, and then tht lead was only one
point at the end of playing time. In
this game, Med ford was leading by
one point, with only five seconds to
play, when a foul allowed the Salem
boys to tl up the score. So, Judging
from the past, the con teats tomorrow
night and Saturday should be real
battles.
Jack Henderson, grandson of the
late George Prescott, and a letterman
of Med ford -Junior high school last
year, is a regular on the Parrish
team this year.
Preliminaries to both games will be
played by the local high school team
and St. Mary's AU-SHars. The St.
Mary's boys are a fast outfit, and My
they are after some Tiger skins In
the games this week.
A radio rally will be held tonight
At OHO, so time in and hear the
Junior Pep olub put on a real pep

Sailor Franz, stocky grappler from
San Diego, rushed over to Les Wolfe's
corner as the latter was leisurely
doffing his robe when the gong
sounded for the beginning of their
match at the armory last night, and
surprised the Texan with a series of
head locks and wrist' whlplocks fol
lowed by a body press to tnk the
first fall in less than a minute.
Wolfe, considerably ruffled by the
unexpected onslaught of the tattooed
tar, came back with fire in his eye
and, after 1ft minutes of strenuous
grappling, clamped on his spectacu
lar rolling sclAsop, with which he
pounded tne goo rrom sme to side
llqe a sack full of mush to even up
the score.
Wolfe took the deciding fall in 10
minutes by again snaring the sailor
with the rolling scissors.
In the opening match of the double
main-event card, Pete Belcaatro, Sac
ramento Italian, took two falls out
of three from Frank Clemens, the
Oklahoma terror, after the latter had
demonstrated something entirely new
to mat fans In this neck of the
woods. The hold, known as the "In
dian paralyser," was gained with a
foot on each side of the Italian's
.head,, one pressing upon the cords
on the side of the neck. Pete found
the situation so unpleasant that he
broke his chicken gut before he In
tended, and yielded to the fall in It
minutes.
Beloaatro took the next two turn
bles In nine and 14 minutes, respect
tvely, with well exeouted crab holds.
Clemens, w.ho spotted Pete several
pounds In weight, proved a fast and
versatile grappler, and Protor Mack
Lll lard .hopes to sign him up for next
Wednesday's card. The popular Wolfe
may also be seen here again next
week.
Llllard'a mat shows are gaining In
attendance, and, If such cards as the
laat two are continued It la predicted
Medford will regain the old-time In
tereet In the game.

The old fellow folded his dun

Barney Roes, of Chicago, lightweight
champion, gave him In the Bronx

"Tell them I'm through," he said
as he shuffled down the ring steps
In the big barn In the Bronx laat
night, thoroughly beaten by the bril
liant little Ross. "I can't fight any
more, so I'm not going to try."
In only one round, the ninth, when '
Barney obviously was coasting was
Petrolic able to work his way labor- i
lously to close quarters and gain the ,
upper hand. Barney beat him once
before In Chicago.
Every other round, and the unani

of the Bronx for the battle, went to

The betters had made Barney a 8

NO SALES TAX FOR
SMUDGE OIL, SPRAY
The Oregon tax commission has de
livered an opinion holding that under
the provisions of the proposed sale
tax there will be no sales tax on
smudge oil and sprays used In culti
vation of fruit. This has been a
moot question among fruitgrowers of
the valley.
The tax commission holds that the
tax would be "pyramiding",, which Is
not allowed in the act. The same rule
applies to other materials used in
farm production and In the sale of
farm produce.
