the road tour tennis series with Big

a short power show which Included
a spray of baffling drives and a
breath-taking service good for 17

Tllden utilized his contract privi

sets last night when he saw the
crowd of 2300 at the coliseum vir

court. Vines' victory was on scores
of 0-3, 3-6, 0-3.
Vines appeared to be at top form,

to 1 the challenger won't be Max Baer.
But It might be King Levlnsky.
Finding It Impossible to tie Baer
up to a contract to fight for the Gar
den In the event he won the cham
pionship. Col. John R. Klips, trick,
president of the big arena, and hi
matchmaker, Jimmy Johnston, have
dropped all negotiations with Baer,
his manager, Ancll Hoffman, and pro
moter Jack Dempsey, and turned to
Levi net: y Instead.
In their first move to build the
talkative ex-fish peddler Into the
status of a title contender, the Gar
den's directors have booked him for
two matches, one against Charley
Massera, young Plttsburgher. the
other against Walter Neuscl. blonde
puncher from Germany on February
0 and March 2. respectively.
If the Klngflsh can get by those
two hurdles, he may be asked to agree
to one more tune-up before getting a
shot at Primo Camera In June,
always assuming the mammoth Ital
ian succeeds In beating Tommy
Lough ran in their 15 -round bout In
Miami February 22,
Propinquity may have a good bit
to do with this big shift In plans.
If Levlnsky, his sister-manager, Lena,

BY LOCAL STORES
Sponsored by the fish and game
committee of the Chamber of Com
merce, a crow killing contest will be
held In Jackson county, commencing
January 20 and ending February 20,
It was announce) this morning by
T. E. Daniels, chairman.
The purpose of the contest Is to
preserve the wild life of the county
and It is definitely known that crows
are extremely'dcstructive in this re
gard. Contests of this nature have
been conducted in many communities
throughout the United States Where
there Is considerable hunting, and it
Is believed that a similar one here
will produce a great deal of good.
Statistics show that 55 per cent of
all quail eggs are destroyed by crows
and a vast number of young quail
are also exterminated. Figures els?
show that only three out of every 100
pheasant eggs are hatched, due to
crows.
Those who enter the contest are
requested to take the crows to the
following s stores, where a record will
be kept in order to determine .he
winners of the merchandise prizes
which will be offered: Hubbard Bros.,
Al Piche Hardware, Medford Furniture
and Hardware company, Pick's Hard
ware, Montgomery Ward company,
Lamport's Sporting Goods store.
Those who Intend to enter the con
test are reminded by the state police
that It is Illegal to shoot from a
highway or across a highway, from a
railroad track or across a railroad
track, and also from an automobile.
IN VOLLEY BALL
It will be a case of brain against

Elder Elks In a game at the Roose

tute the brain and which the brawn,
no one was so daring as to state
today, although the Elks were quite
chesty about last week's victory. If
no cases of the gout break out in
the ranks they feel assured of an
equally good edge over the "sprouts"
in next Monday's competition, say
they.
