One of tha most enthusiast Us com
mittee meetings held In recent months
was conducted last night at the
Chamber of Commerce when the gen
eral committee for Oregon's Diamond
Jubilee celebration met to further
formulate plans for the celebration.
It was announced this morning by
2. C. (Jerry) Jerome, chairman.
Every phase of the celebration was
covered In dete.ll and each commit
tee chairman brought In a report and
received Instructions to go ahead
with his particular part of the pro
gram. The most important phase of the
celebration will be the historic pag
eant which will be conducted under!
the chairmanship of Professor Irving
E. Vlnlng of Ashland. . Arrangements
have been made for the pageant to
be staged by the Southern Oregon
Normal school, and the theme of the
entire pageant will be written and
directed by Professor Angus Bowmer.
While definite arrangements have
not been made as to where the pag
eant will be held, It la expected that
It will be staged either at the Junior
high school football grounds or at
the grounds of the Senior high.
Work of writing and directing the
pageant Is a big Job, but members of
the general committee feel that It Is
in capable hands with Professor Bow
mer taking care oi same, as he has
had a great deal of experience along
these lines. Mr. Bowmer Is professor
of dramatics at the Southern Oregon
Normal school.
-Another feature of the celebration
which will attract a great deal of at
tention will be the pioneer parade,
and many novel features will be In
troduced Into this which have not
been conducted elsewhere m far as
Is known. Professor Vlnlng has up
pointed J. Verne Shangle to take care
of this work.
Huge Products Exhibit.
The home products exhibit, which
will be conducted at the Armory, will
be one of the largest which Oregon
has wltnesed for years. The commit
tee nas authorized W. A. Gates, the
chairman of the exhibit, to draw up
contracts and Immediately contact
the manufacturers of the state In
order to have them sign for space.
In this work, Mr. Gates la receiving
the wholehearted cooperation of the
Oregon Manufacturers' association.
The question of the publication of
a souvenir booklet and advertising was
discussed at length and arrangements
will soon be completed for the ad
vertising of the celebration through
out the Pacific coast.
Plan Dog Jtacee.
It Is expected that dog races will
be held at the fairgrounds each night
and a proposition has been submitted
by a person who has handled dog
rices In other places. Complete dj
tails regarding this feature will be
available, It is hoped, within a very

surrounding country so that those
who attend the celebration will be

It Is hoped that during one after
noon a band concert will be held, di
vided Into two claseve, one for fra
ternal and municipal bands end the
other for high school bands. Wilson
Walt la in charge of this a-nd will
Immediately contact Oregon bands,
urging their support for the contest
for which prlees will be given.
HI Mori ml Skit Contest.
An entirely new Idea wsa injected
Into the meeting last night which
met with the approval of all present,
It was suggested by Professor Vlnlng
that a historical exit contest be con
ducted during one day of the oele
brat Ion and entrance be confined
only to the schools of higher learn
ing In the state, Mr. Vlnlng has ap
pointed Ralph Bailey of the Medford
high school to work out the details
on this.
It is proposed to establish an ex
hibit of relics at the old courthouM
In Jacksonville, and C C. Dunnlugton
of Jacksonville will act as chairman
of this phase. The committee be
lieves that many people throughout
the Rogue River valley have old-time
relics which they will be glad to lend
and an exhibit of this nature will
undoubtedly attract a great deal of
attention.
Question of street decorations will
be left entirely to the retail mer
chants' committee of the Chamber of
Commerce, John Moffatt, chairman,
and the general committee has In
structed Mr. Moffatt to go ahead and
make his arrangements as soon a
possible. ,
Committeemen Go Ahead.
Practically all the committee chair
men have been authorlred by the
general committee to carry out their
respective arrangements at once and
It is expected that within a short
time complete plans will be formu
lated.
A school essay context will be con
ducted throughout the at a to of Ore
gon, with many prises being offered
for the best essays submitted. C.
Glenn Smith, principal of the high
school, will have charge of this part
of the program.
Question of a queen contest was
discussed at length and It was de
cided that inasmuch as the celebra
tion Is state-wide tha,t It was hardly
feasible to put on a regular elimina
tion contest. In Its place, however,
the committee decided to have a
queen mother selected, who will be
the oldest pioneer In Oregon, and that
each county be asked to provide a
princess,

work was gone over by the committee
and as a result the celebration la be
ginning to take on definite snap

been ruled out of the competition
because according to mythology a
member of his family won a similar
contest a few thousand years ago.
This edict has narrowed the race
down to Marmle Olson representing
the blonde type and Francis Nandle
the brunettes. "Red" Denman how
ever la making a fight and It la al
leged has been buying votes right
and left. In spite of his complex
ton he may prove to be a dark horse.
The pictures will be displayed In
some prominent window downtown
aome time this week and the reac
tion of the public Is eagerly await
ed by the contestant!. First prlre
means a free trip to Crater Laks on
snow shoes and a free swim In the
lake for the winner.

Says State Commissioner
SALEM, Jan. 18. (AP) Quarterly
payments of real property taxes with
rebates of from one to three per
cent, were expected to result In the
largest payment being received Mar.
16, for the taxes on the 1033 levies,
Charles V. Oalloway, chairman of
the state tax commission stated to
day.
Last year taxes on real property to
the various counties totaled 943,
000,000 and It was expected the
amount this year would be approx
imately the aame. Many taxpayers
were expected to take advantage of
the rebates and probably about half
of this smount would be paid on
the first quarterly payment.
Have Your Options.
Taxpayers have four options In
payments this year. If the first
quarter Is paid on or about March
16, no rebate will be granted, but
one-fourth of the year's taxes will
keep payers In good standing and
no delinquent penalty would be
paid. Half-year's payment In March
would bring a one per cent rebate
on the entire amount, three-quar
ters payment would bring a two per
cent rebate, and If the taxes for the
entire year are paid In March, a ;
three per cent rebate will be al- j
lowed.
Other quarterly payments will be
due June 16, September 16 and De
cember 16.
Blanks Sent Out.
The commission was busy sending
out about 100,000 Income tax blanks
for payment April 1 on 1033 In
comes. This is about 40,000 more
blanks than sent out last year be
cause of the change In the law re
ducing the exemptions. Of this
number about half would bring In
taxable returns while the balance
would be non-taxable reports.
The exemptions under the new
law are 91,600 for married persons,
1800 for single and 9300 for each dependent.
The new sales tax. If not referend-
ed would become effective March
10. If referended and Is passed It
would become effective between May
18 and June 1, It was declared, fol
lowing canvass of votes. Defeat
would eliminate a sales tax.
