VICTORY FOR JANICE
T IGI1T from a street lamp glared
Into the Interior. Their glanccB

terial of bumor Ignited and flared.
Janice lifted her chin and laughed.
Grahame's Hps twitched.
"Oh!" cried the girl. "How per
fectly lmbectltc!" Her voice mim
icked her own. 6 'Thank you,' she
aald. Then you growl, 'It was noth

air. Indeed' Oh, why can't peo
ple" ,
Grahame chuckled, "Did 1 growl?"
Janice stifled a giggle. "Hoarsely,"
she averred.
Grahame felt pleasantly warmed.
Some watchful wariness seemed to
relax within him. That curious ano
tnnoylng embarrassment he was
utu. i'Ue ucuideul liaell was curious.
It was so unnecessary. The tan car
attempted to pass us. It pressed us
into tho curb. Yet, at that place, the
street Is wide. The man whom you
struck was driving. There were oth

Tbey were getting out when your
cab turned the corner. I didn't see
thorn again."
"Scare. 1. 1 suppose didn't want to
be mixed up In It. Let the driver take
the bumps." He checked an Impulse
to tell her that he had followed the
two cars fro a, tbe studio. There was
the chance that Bhe might misunder
stand the prompting that had drawn
him Hfter the three men In the tan
car. He tingled with the possibili
ties of his embarrassment were she
to believe It had been the black car
he followed. He concluded, "Yes,
that was probably It."
"Yes-s." The girl's voice was hesi
tant. Grahame said quickly, "You don't
think so? Did you recognize either of
them?"
Reflectively she looked through
the window. "I don't know." She
shrugged. "But no. It couldn't be
ho." She laughed a little. "He drives
a much nicer automobile."
"Maybe his friends don't," replied
Grahame with a trace of grlmneBS.

GRAHAME. watching her profile
as the street lights threr pat

that he could quite i.gree with any
eulogy of Janice Kent. He felt that

be Just as well to ask hi m a few
questions."
No." Thero was flnnllty Iti
Janice Kent's tone, an odgo of au
thority. Grahame was mildly sur
prised. While hor Insistence puzzled
him, nevertheless his wonder was
chiefly that this nppnrently frail slip
of a girl could be so decisive.
Somehow within the bounds of his
knowlodgo and beliefs of women, he
assumod that It was the man even
