Society Looks to
Successful Year
The first meeting of the new year
of the Foreign Missionary society of
the First M. E. church with Mrs.
C. A. Meeker as hostess might be
termed as a good indication of the
spirit for the coming year a good
attendance, a good program.
Mrs. Koppes, vice-president, occu
pied the chair during the business
session, which was opened with
prayer by Mrs. B. Van Dyke, fol
lowed with singing "What a, Friend
We Have in Jesus." and the Bible
lesson, "Thy word Is a lamp unto
my feet," also conducted by Mrs.
Vsn Dyke.
Mrs. Mortensen gave a review of
the work of "Stewardship," what It
entails in the way of service, also
tithing.
Mrs. E. C. Koppen. program leader,
presented the following numbers:
Song, "Revive Us Again."
Study topic, "Women and the Mes
sage" Mrs. O. V. Myers.
"Modern Evangelists that Work In
India" Mrs. Mortensen.
Piano solo, "The Swallow" Miss
Dorothy McKenzie.
Mrs. Shepard related briefly of her
work with the Wesleyan Guild in
Colorado.
The hostess and -her assistant, Mrs.
Koppea, served tea and cakes at the
conclusion c the program.

The regular social meeting of the
American Legion Auxiliary will be
held In the armory club rooms Mon
day evening, January 8. An evening
of music is being planned and
good attendance Is urged.
Preceding the social meeting, Vie

A series of benefit card parties
has been announced, the first one
to be held January, 17. Further de
tails will be announced later.
Members are also asked to watch
the local paper concerning the dis
trict conference to be held In Med
ford at a near future date.

The members of the Wednesday
Study club gave their annual guest-
day social Wednesday afternoon in
the Women's club rooms at two-thirty
o'clock. Mrs. Jonas Wold read in
her charming manner two selections, i
"A Christmas Present to a Lady." by'
Myra Kelly, and "Sunrise Penn," byj
Mary Freeman.
Tea was served from a beautifully
appointed table. The center piece was
a large bouquet of roses, snapdragons.

Mrs. Leland Mentzer was hostess to
the Thursday contract club at her
home last week, entertaining at des
sert bridge. There were two tables
of cards in play and prize for high
score went to Mrs. Harry Prentice.

"New Year's Greeting from the Med
ford Chamber of Commerce A. H.
Banwell, manager," was the message
on the air yesterday, when members
of the Amateur Radio club of South
ern Oregon opened operations at the
chamber of commerce with receiving
and broadcasting set.
The first place contacted was the
Tacoma, Wash., chamber of commerce,
with which Mr. Banwell was former
ly associated. Canada and California
also received the greeting and the
radio boys will continue operations
through this week, working nights as
well as daya to transfer the new year
greeting to all points of the globe.
In honor of the continued radio op
erations, this coming week has been
designated "Home Town Week" and
all local residents, who formerly re
sided in other cities, are asked to In
vite at least two old friends tn the
former home town to visit Medford
during this year, particularly between
June 3 and 9, when Oregon's Diamond
Jubilee will be celebrated here. Any
one wishing pamphlets on the Rogue
River valley to accompany the letters
will find them available at the cham
ber of commerce.

radio set yesterday with the assist
ance of E. C. Caster.
RELIGION AND RUSSIA

forces and the church in Russia will
be discussed In two interesting ser
mons announced by Rev. William J.
Howell of the First Presbyterian

APPEAL PENDS IN
BANKS CASE: MUST
STAY IN PRISON
SALEM. Jan. 6 (Special) Denial
by the state supreme court recently i
of a certificate of probable cause was!
received "as a severe shock" by L. A.j
Banks, former Medford editor, now !
serving a life sentence for murder,
friends said today.
Banks haa expressed hopes for many ,
weeks that the certificate would be
granted, thus pormitttng him to be:
transferred from the penitentiary here i
to the Lane county Jail at Eugene.
Refusal of the certificate by the1
high court ended hopes of a transfpr !
but did not close his appeal to the j
court. Justices said. They explained I
that Banks appenl Is still pending
before the supreme court. Denial of
the certificate simply made the lower
court's order of incarceration bind
ing. Banks, a highly nervous and tem
peramental man. Is working in the
laundry at the penitentiary. He o
cuplea a single cell. Much of his 4 line
la spent reading, writing and planning
for the fuuire. Penitentiary officials
describe him as "a good prisoner."
He was convicted of fatally shoot
ing George Prescott. constable, when
the latter attempted to arrest him at
Medford last March.

Here With Family
A. O. Arnold and family, formerly
of Los Angeles, have arrived here.
Mr. Arnold will be connected with
the Medford branch of the Blake,
Moffitt As Towne Paper Co. The Ar
nolds will make their home in this
city.
A. R. Woodhill, local manager for
the paper company, stated that Mr.
Arnold was added to the company
personnel to meet the increased bus
iness and to prepare for the future,
which looks brighter In southern
Oregon than for several years.
