Churches To Hold
Special Services
For Prayer Week
Federated churchea will hold special
services this week In observing the
"World's Week of Prayer." Beginning
on Monday night, at 7:30, the men
of the Bible class will conduct ft ser
vice specially In the interest of men
All men are invited, and the service
will be open to all comers. On Tues
day evening the young people will
have a special service, under the di
rection of Mr. A. W. Ayera. Young
people will present the messages, and
nil are Invited.
Wednesday the regular mid-week
service will be held; but will meet tn
the auditorium of the church to ac
commodate the larger gathering. On
Thursday evening the ladles of the
Bible class will direct a aervlce in
the special Interest of Women's work;
and all ere urged to come. Then,
on Friday evening the summing up
of the need of prayer will be pre
sented In a great closing service.

Prominent Angler & Sportsman Appeals
For Protection of Rogue River Steelhead
To the Editor:
For the pat three years the num
ber of steelhead have diminished each
year worse than the previous one.
This year It wsa so pronounced that
I was somewhat alarmed, ao during
my four monthe atay at Grant Paaa.
I took it on myself to spend much of
my time Investigating from place to
place, talking with many, also taking
trips at different points on the river
from its mouth at Gold Beach up to
Its source at Crater Lake which I wilt
cover in the next paragraph.
a. At Oold Beach the .commercial
fishing, combined with seining waa
depleting the supply of steelhead by
hundreds of tons of the larger fun,
from two to ten pounds each.
b. In October I made personal visits
to many different place along the
river where the water la taken from
the river for power or Irrigation pur
poses. It was shocking to find the in
advertant attempt at complying with
Article 90 Oregon Game Laws; Screen
ing outlets from river. In passing,
wish to state that Article 00 ta one
of the strongest laws of its type In
the United fitatee but a law not en
forced is worse than no low at all.
c. I apent the whole day at the
opening of Savage Dam (October
1933) and along the three irrigation
ditches leading from there. The re
sults were shocking, so much so that
the experiences prompted thla letter,
The dam was opened early in the
morning, by noon most of the water
was out of ditches so I took three
trips along these three ditches only
to find millions upon millions of
small fish from two to eight Inches
long, all dying In the mud bottons,
The commission had stationed one
man with a hand aelne and one six
quart patl at the dam where he could
be aeen (two pictures enclosed wr.n
this one man in action), whose duty
was to save all these millions of fish
In each of the three ditches, each
ditch ten miles long or more.
It was ludicrous to eay the least, to
see this one man and pall, flu aame
with little fish right at the dam, then

down to the river, then throwing
same out into the white swirling wat
ers trusting they might live.
Later In the evening, when the
water had gone down and alt the men
(the one man) of the Commission had
gone home, there were hundred of
steelhead ranging from four to ten
pounds each that were stranded in
the shallow holes In the rocka left
to die, but as It happened, many local
Inhabitants arrived with cluba and
sacks to carry them away after knock
lng them in the head.
This la one place where the Com
mission could have placed one man
with a long hand net and saved all
these fish, aa they could have been
dipped up and placed In the river
not more than fifty feet away.
I enclose a picture showing eleven
pound fish which waa picked up dead,
showing the size of these fish that
were lost to the anglers aa well aa
their spawning farther up tn the river.
The Medford sportsmen and all flail
ing camps above the Savage Dam ob
ject to the present fiah lanned: they
seem to think the steelhead will not
paas over It. Well, they will paas over
I find, but with great difficulty, I
would recommend a better ladder
that will be eaaler for the ateelhead,
while the salmon seem to find no
trouble with the preaent one.
Conclusion: By passing a law to pro
hibit seining at the mouth of the
Rogue, then enforcing Article 00 Game
leJiwa of Oregon will in time (perhaps
three years) regain the old reputation
of the Rogue as a steelhead river.
Further: It would be advisable to
set aside certain sections of the river

boat, marking and signing such sec
tions. Let's give the ateelhead a. break,
or fisherman a real thrill, and In re-,
turn bring large caah returns to the
state of Oregon.
