KEY TO
OF LIFE'S
Science Near Long Sought
Goal Is Present Beiief
Capacity for Dividing
Keeps World Replenished
Ry HOWARD W. BUKEM.EB
(Associated Press Science Editor.)
OOLD SPRING HARBOR, N. T.,
Dec. 19 (P) That science is closing
in rapidly on the secret of how Ufa
la formed from non-living matter la
predicted in the annual report of the
Carnegie Institution.
A life molecule which apparently
holds this secret Is described by Dr.
C. B. Davenport, director here of the
department of genetics of the insti
tution. Tlits molecule Is the gene, an
ultra -microscopic particle. apparently
made by the Joining of a number of
atoms. Genes carry all the charac
ters of heredity in body and in germ
cells.
Gene Big Puzzle.
"When we understand the struc
ture of the gene," Dr. Davenport
states, "we shall know the essential
difference between living and non
living matter.
"The geneticist should shortly b
in position to aid the chemist in
getting at the ultimate nature of liv
ing matter, and especially must both
cooperate in the solution of that
fundamental property of the living
molecule, namely Its capacity for di
viding indefinitely with retention of
all Its qualities.
"For upon thla property depends
all agriculture and animal husband
rydepends all life Itself.
Once Lifeless World.
"Berore the self-dlvtdlng moleeula
had been evolved, this waa a lifeless
world: unless it has been evolved in
some ot.ier planets, they are lifeless
still.
"The living, dividing moleeula, of
which the gene is a special sort, la
the great upbuilding agency in a uni
verse that la running down. For the
genes create living matter out of the
non-living material, white periodic
ally that Which they have created la
returned to ita source for new gen
erations to feed upon." x
