OABMEL, Cat. OTP) An insignifi
cant worm furnished the key to the
recovery of many missing volumes
brought here by rather Junlpero
Serra and his fellow "padres" of the
mission period of early California
life, the Very Rev. James Culleton.
D. D., revealed today.
The famed Serra brought a few
well-worn tomes when he came to
found the Carmel Mission. Thete
were the nucleus of California's first
library. Other volumes came from
the Old World by way of Mexico City.
Time and the confusion that fol
lowed the secularization of the mis
sions scattered or lost the old vol
umes, some of which dated back cen
turies.
Pather Culleton, chancellor of the
Monterey-Fresno diocese, and Pathe:
Michael O'Connell, rector at Carmel,
searching through old records and
tomes, came across the worm.
They described It as "a worm of
the book variety peculiar to the re
gion, which had come to life In the
center of an old volume and had
traveled In a straight line, cutting
through half the book in which he
was hatched and through three others
beside It on the ancient shalf."
The larvae of the worm contained
ash, which showed where his life had
ended as he begun to bore through
the second cover of the old book.
"Strange to say' said Pather Cul
leton, "these four books, though not
of one set, were numbered consecu
tively, showing that the worm did
his work In the library which cata
logued them.
"Catalogue marks on 58 volumes
had been considered those of the San
Fernando library of Mexico. But the
worm upset this notion and showed
that the marks had been made by
Pather Serra or one of his Immediate ,
successors. 1
"The little insect also proved that
he had done his work Ifx the Carmel
library. The padres were in the habit
of using as bookmarks any scrap of
paper that might be lying about the
study table. One of these scraps was
dated 1836, another 1839. Through
that dated 1830 the worm had gone
while through the other there was no
hole. This meant that between these
years, and therefore, long after the
books had ceased to come from San
Pernando, the books were In order
on the Carmel Mission shelves.
"Once it was sure that the marks
designated books of Carmel's first
library It was easy to know the ap
proximate number of volumes In the
oldest section of the collection, to
recognise tomes that had strayed and
recover some of the missing treasures.
"Sixty-seven of the books were re
covered in Santa Crux. Eight were
located in Mission San Juan Bau
tlsts. A prlvste library yielded 177
volumes. One convent yielded six
and another five. Two were found in
Hollister. Four hundred and fifty
eight have been recovered in all. Six
are now in various missions.
"The surest key to the restoration
of the Carmel and San Carlos Mis
sions library is the particular type
of book worm which thrives in the
Monterey area alone. The names and
catalogue of the missing volumes are
now known, but there is little like
lihood that all will be recovered."

firm nor deny the report that Van
couver had been selected, but he
did say "negotiations are under way
