PRINCETON SPURNS TRIP
TO PASADENA ROSE BOWL
By PAUL ZIMMERMAN
Associated pirss H porta Writer
PA8ADEKA, Cal., Dec. 1. (AP) Stanford and Vie local tournament
committee stuck their fingers In the Hose Bowl here today to find the
old adage about the thorn still goes.
While the biggest thorn found in
the New Year's day football game
NEW YORK, Dc. !. (AP) Thanks
giving day's football battles had been
written into the record books today
With Alabama. Utah, Nebraska and
Oregon walking off with the princi
pal prizes.
1 Championship hopes were involved
as Alabama whipped Vanderbllt, 7-0.
In a surprisingly hard-fought en
gagement, and Utah toppled the pre
Tlously undefeated Colorado Aggies,
13-0.
Alabama's triumph earned for the
Crimson Tide at least a tie for the
southeastern title with Louisiana
State the only other remaining con
tender. Louisiana State must turn
back Tulane tomorrow and Tennessee
next week to be able to dispute Ala-
bama's right to the throne.
Utah Fogs Issue.
Utah's setback of the Colorado
Aggies turned the Rocky Mountain
conference race upside down and en
abled the Utes to wind up the sea
son in a triple tie with the Aggies
and Denver for the title. Denver lost
Its chance to gain clear title to the
championship by dropping a 14-7 de-
clslon to Colorado university.
T Nebraska, lte undefeated season
wrecked by Pittsburg 11 days ago(
wound up In a blaze of glory, sending
Oregon State's Beavers down to 22-0
defeat at Lincoln.
In the far west. Oregon, coming
back from its terrific beating by
Southern California, upset St. Mary's
Gaels, 1S-7. Just to give the form
aheets another Jolt, TJ. C. L. A. won Its
first Pacific coast conference game by
downing Washington State, 7-0.
Pitt Triumphs.
In the east, Pitt wound up a sea
son marred only by the Minnesota de
feat by spilling Carnegie Tech, 16-0,
while Cornell won a duel of forward
passes from Penn, 20-12, and Colgate
swept through Brown, 25-0. West
Virginia earned a 7-2 victory over
Washington & Jefferson.
Kentucky took another bad beating,
losing to Tennessee, 27-0, while North
Carolina was beating Virginia, 14-0,
Virginia Poly and Virginia Military
were playing a scoreless draw, and
Centenary was protecting Its unbeaten
record with a 28-12 conquest of
Loyola of New Orleans.
22 10 0 DEFEAT
LINCOLN, Neb., Dee. 1. (AP)
One of the most successful football
seasons ever enjoyed by the Univer
sity of Nebraska passed Into history
today after the 22-to-0 trouncing the
Cornhuskers gave the Oregon 8tate
Beavers In a Thanksgiving day Inter
sections! classic.
The holiday crowd of 25,000 saw
George Henry Sauer, Nebraska's great
triple threat fullback, pitted against
the versatile Norman Franklin of Ore
gon State, and It was these two who
played leading roles in tne turning
point of the game.
Nebraska scored a touchdown in
the second quarter, largely on the
strength of two passes, but missed
f on the try for extra point. Late In
the third period Franklin made a
good punt return and 20 yards In
the next two plays to put the ball
on the Nebraska 1 6-yard line.
Franklin and W. Joslln carried the
ball to the Huskers" five-yard line
for a first down. Four shots at the
Nebraska line yielded little more than
three yards and the Huskers took the
ball as the period ended.
Punting from behind his goal, and
with an advantage of a light breeze,
came In the form of Princeton's:
statement It would not be available
for the annual classic a local squab-1
ble cropped up In mild form to up
set all concmd.
University of Southern California
officially indicated that, white it had
no particular designs on the game
Vita season, It felt slighted because
It had not been taken Into the hud
dle with Oregon and Stanford when
the western team was selected.
Princeton's announcement late yes
terday came as a surprise, although
the Paclfle Coast grid fans had been
aware of the Tigers' agreement with
Yale concerning post-season games,
it generally was believed the rule
would be waived.
Stanford players had put Prince
ton on the preferred list ahead of
Army and Duke, the other outstand
ing untied and undefeated elevens,
but Al Masters, graduate manager of
the Palo Alto Institution, said here
yesterday that no Invitation had been
extended and that none could be
sent until after Saturday's important
games.
The Southern California thorn ap
peared to hurt the Rose tournament
committee's thumb more than that
of Stanford, although alumni of "the
farm 'admitted they were irked.
Sauen's kick went over Franklin's
head. The Beaver flash Jumped for
the ball, barely touched It and then
raced back to the 12-yard line, grab
ged the ball and got back to his 20
yard line, then a bad pass from cen
ter sent Franklin ohaslng for the
ball behind the end zone and Ne
braska scored a safety.
The heavy Beaver line, which out
weighed the Nebraska forwards more
than 10 pounds to the man, wilted
and Nebraska made two more touch
downs In rapid fire, counting on the
tries for extra points. Sauer made
the first of these two touchdowns
on a 28-yard offtackle sprint and
took a pass for the extra point.
COUGARS. 7 TO 0
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1. (AP) -Thanks
to a clever piece of pass ln
terceptlon by "Mystery" Mike Franko
vlch, the University of California at
Los Angeles football team was able
to look back today on the successful
termination of a season frought with
tough luck.
Frankovlch, who plys the trade of
the occult in Idle moments, pulled
a touchdown play out of the hat of
seeming defeat yesterday to give the
Bruins a 7 to 0 victory over Washing
ton State.
It was the high light performance
of a closely fought battle, coming
early In the second period after the
Cougars had been denied three
chances to score.
Then to make the situation more
acute for the Invaders, Mystery Mike
kicked the goal.

TO REFEREE IT
EVENTS DEC. 1 5TH
Jack Dempsey, the great "Manaasa
Mauler," and most popular of all
fistic heroes, will arrive In Med ford
Friday, December 16 to referee a big
all-star wrestling card at the Armory.
Medford sport fans will have the op
portunity of seeing the big ex-heavyweight
boxing champion of the world
at close range and in the active roll
as referee of th- wrestling bouts.
Dempsey, for years the idol of sport
fans all over the world and still one
of the leading figures In the boxing
game, has practically retired from
aotlve competition In the ring at the
present, but still keeps himself in
the marvelous condition that made
him such a great champion. Jack
may have lost the spring in his legs,
but he still packs that killing wallop
In either hand that spelled "curtains"
for so many of his opponents, snd as
far as socking ability goes, he could
probably stand up to any heavyweight
In the boxing game today and beat
his ears off.
Two years ago Dempsey toured the
country meeting all comers In four
round bouts. On this tour he drew
some of the largest crowds ever to
see boxing' bouts In different cities
over the country. Jack has been ref
ereejng a good many boxing bouts
around the country with wonderful
success and has been secured by Pro
moter Herb Owen to referee some of
his wrestling cards In Oregon.
The life of a wrestling referee Is
a tough Job at the best, with so
many of these rough, tough, wrestlers
in the game. A referee has to be on
his guard every moment to protect
himself from the attacks of these
boys. Dempsey had considerable
trouble In the first few wrestling
bouts he refcreed, but after he had
completely slaughtered a couple of
the tough boys, who had tried to get
smart with him. the rest of them be
came rather leery. However, of late.
Jack Dempsey is wasting no tune
arguing with any of these tough boys.
He gives them their Instructions snd
alter warning them two or three times
for breeches of wrestling rules, Demp
sey takes matters Into his own hands
and makes a few decisions. If the
tough boys don't like It and get rough.
they do so at their own risk for Jack
Mill packs a punch that Is dynamite.
Ho doesn't bother the boys, except
when necessary.
The wrestling card being planned
for this eveht will be announced in
a few days.

TO WIN. 13 TO 7
8 AN FRANCISCO. Dee. 1. (AP)
For the first time In five years of
football rivalry, the University of
Oregon held a victory over the St.
Mary's Gaels today the score, 13
to 7.
Defeated In four previous encoun
ters, the Web footers outsmarted and
outfought the Oaets at Ker-ar sta
dium yesterday and Oregon rooters,
hilarious over the victory, broke up
and carried away a goal post.
Backed up by Mike Mi It u tad, "Iron
man" fullback, the Oregon line more
than matched the St. Mary's for
ward wall, while tricky backfleld ma
neuvers left the Gaels befuddled at
times.
Almost before the 20.000 spectators
had taken their seats, the Wcbfooters
launched an attack, with Temple and
Gee leading the charges that car
ried the ball 67 yards for a touch
down. On a fake run. Tomple for
ward passed to Oee to end the drive
with a score for the northerners.
Temple converted with a place kick.
St, Mary's, held scoreless through
out the 'first half, tied the count
early In the third period as George
Wilson, halfback, slashed and weaved
11 yards and fumbled In the end
zone only to have the ball recovered
on scoring ground by George Canrlua,
Gael end. Partes converted.
With the ball on the Gaels' five
yard stripe at the opening of the
last period, Temple cracked tackle
for two. Gee was thrown for a three
yard loss. Then, a reverse from Mtk
ulak to Parke, cacey Oregon full
back, completely deceived the Gaals.
Parke raced around end for the win
ning touchdown without a hand be
ing placed on htm. Temple's kick
was short.
