Game Saturday Final Hurdle
For Oregon Men Of Troy
Will Be Full Of Fight
Is Observer's Guess.
By Russell J. Nenland
(Associated PreM Sporta Writer)
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 13. (API
Down oa the palm-studded, green
acred campus of Stanford they con
tinued to celebrate today the 13-7
Cardinal triumph Saturday over
Southern California that furnished
. far western football with its most
spectacular upset of the season.
Up in the north. Oregon rooters
made the welkin ring as they re
fought the 13-3 victory over Oregon
State that nailed the Webfoot ban
ner a bit more firmly to the mast
head of the Pacific coast conference.
Bears Win One
Over in Berkeley the campanile
chimes seemed to peal out the gld
tidings of the smashing 33-0 win
over Washington that brought Cali
fornia's Bears their first conference
victory of the season after two ties
and one defeat.
University of California at ls
Angeles' Bruins followers congratu
lated themselves on a narrow 14
13 win over the San Diego Marines
which while not of conference bear
ing caused the Bruins to take a bat
tering that will not help In forth
coming conference tests.
Montana boosters were Jubilant
over the 13-7 win over Gonzaga. a
non-conference team that earlier In
the season held Oregon State to a
scoreless tie.
But to the principals of these vic
tories or defeats, It was Just an
other week-end of a 1933 schedule
that has listed more reversals and
upendlngs In the history of the great
American college sport In the far
west.
Saturday Cllma
To the actors next Saturday's pro
gram was more interesting than the
one that has been written Into the
records. On that day the conference
championship will have to be deter
mined when the last pigskin Is boot
ed for the year.
Oregon, league leader, with four
victories and no defeats and only
three points scored against it. travels
to Southern California In the hopes
of duplicating the performance by
Stanford that saw the Trojans de
feated for the first time In 28 games,
since early in 1B31.
Although Oregon beat Oregon State
13- 3 and Oregon State previously
held Southern- California to a score
less tie, no Oregon booster Is so rash
as to predict a walkaway over the
Trojan forces. The consensus Is
Southern California will be twice as
full of fight as the result of the
stinging defeat by Stanford. The
Trojans also will have the advant
age of playing on their home field
and In warm weather to which Ore
gon's Webfooters are not accustomed.
The championship goes to Oregon if
it wins.
Cards Face Grizzlies
Flushed with their great victory
after five successive .defeats by
Southern California, the Cardinals of
Stanford remain at home to take on
Montana's Grizzlies. It Is not con
sidered likely. Bill Corbus, Stanford's
sure shot kicking guard, will have
to boot two field goals to beat Mon
tana, as he did against Southern
California.
California's Bears also entertain at
home, meeting an Idaho eleven that
last week lost to Washington State,
14- 6. As California played Washing
ton State to a 6-6 tie its chances of
beating Idaho are considered good.
Smarting from its bad beating by
California. Washington will meet the
Bears' "Little Brothers," the Univer
sity of California at Los Angeles
Bruins. With hopes of gaining a
partial revenge. On their home
grounds at Seattle, where they beat
Stanford, 6-0 two weeks ago, the
Huskies should prove more formid
able than their recent trouncing In-
dlcates. U. C. L. A. has not scored 1
a point in three conference games.
Only a few conference games will
remain after Saturday's heavy ached- j
ule Is cleaned up. Oregon State has '
completed Its conference play. I

Oregon supporters enjoyed afterward.
Although there was a cold high fog,
enveloping the Rose City all day, the
field was dry, and the visibility ex
cellent. Morever as should be true
of a big game, the excitement was
intense throughout. With the score
13-3 In the last quarter, where it
had been 0-3 in the first quarter,
the opponents on both steles had
their big moments, and while to
those getting the report over the ra
dio the game may .have appeared to
be on ice for Oregon, in that last
quarter, with O. S. C. fighting every
minute and dangerous at all times,
to those witnessing the contest, there
was always that possibility of a break
or a Garrison finish, which kept the
huge crowd of 30.000 people on the
edge of their seats throughout. As
it was, had Blancone, sub for Vie
O. S. C. star half-back, Franklin, not
stumbled over his own interferer the
final score would have been 13 to 10.
O. S. C. following this sensational
side line dash uf 64 yards, was only
about 12 yards from a touchdown
when the final gun sounded!
Yes, it was a great game, between
two of the best and strongest foot
ball teams Oregon has ever produced.
And there Is no doubt t!it the best
team won. It was a, case of a pow
erful, consistent team, against a
powerful and FLASHY one. Time af
ter time O. 8. C. threatened to
score. Franklin, although doped to!
be bottled up by the Oregon defense,
refused to be, and made some of the
prettiest runs in a crowded field ever
seen in an Oregon game. But O. 8.
C. couldn't sustain Its offensive. Or
egon COULD. When a few yards for
a first down or a touchdown HAD to
be made; that Oregon backfield, pro
tected by a Beautiful line, simply
MADE It. That the university truly
has a GREAT team, a team not only
powerful but with the true fighting
heart, was shown In the second quar
ter, when the score 3-0 against them
playing a team that had held the Tro
ans scoreless, those Oregon boys. In
stead letting down or losing their
heads, simply stepped on It harder,
rose to real championship heights
and 3lmply were NOT to be denied.
They were going to win and win they
did.
On the other hand If Lady Luck
had Insisted upon taking a hand and
playing favorites, anyone who knows
football knows the result might very
well have been different. At any
rate there Is no disgrace in th sort
of defeat O. S. C. suffered. Certainly
It showed it can "take" it and has
a team that would make any team In
the country hustle.
No doubt about It, this man Mlk
ulak lived up to his advance notlcesl
He played a whale of a game, not only
leading both teams for individual
ground gaining, and as usual being
everywhere on the defense, but his
blocking out of O. 8. O. tacklers was
one of the greatest single factors In
Oregon's decisive victory. The way
j Mike perform against the Trojans
Uila next week end. If he doesn't
open the eyes of Los Angeles to what
Oregon can produce it the way of
all-American mnterial then we wilt
lie greatly mistaken.
Of course from now on Oregon is
decidedly on the spot. It Is the only
major team in the west, untied and
! unbeaten. With Stanford's surprls-
'R win over Southern California, Or.
egon victories over the Trojans and
St. Mary's would for the first time
In a couple of decades, assure this
state Rose Bowl honors. Its a tough
assignment. Southern California will
be hipped up for next Saturday's game
as never before, and everyone In that
j part of the state will be out to win
(that game, and save the Trojans
: from their first disaster in two years
A win for the Trojans is the only
thing that can now redeem that
Stanford defeat, and -how they will
work to get it. Moreover St. Mary's
has one of the best teams in Its his
tory, as its victory over Fordhnm
showed. Yes, Oregon has something
cut out for them, and yet those who
saw them perform Saturday won't be
surprised if they CUT It.
At any rate, win or lose, as a col
lege football coach, Prink Calllson
has certainly arrived. He has made
good with a capital "G", which cer
tanly tickles everyone In .his old
home town I
Now win (or tie) that game on
