CAROLINE'S 8TORY
DY nine o'clock twilight was

Ducks working In shallow water

root stocks and tubers. Sometimes
they will dive more than 10 feet to
grub for food on a sand or mud bot
tom. The merganser, or fish duck, fre
quently found along the Oregon coast,
is the only specie which lives on flan.

Caroline clung to him. After a mo
ment he got bold of himself.
He said, "You mustn't!" and

"Jim do you, love me really?"

A little shaky laugh came from
somewhere just under his chin. Her
balr rubbed against hie cheek.
"I never asked you that." An arm

"Silly!" aald Caroline. She stood
on tiptoe, dragged his head down,
and kissed blm shamelessly. "Jim

She was lifted, held so close that
he could not breathe, and most pas
sionately kissed. Then with her
heart thumping and ber head spin
ning, she was set down at arm's
length and bold there.
"Now you've got to go home," aald
Jim In an odd hard voice. "No,
it's no use you've got to go. If I
get out of this, we'll get married,
but until I do you've got to stand
clear."
"Oh!" said Caroline rather faint
ly. Jim's grip was hurting her. His
