counters of a score of wide open bars
as the city toasted the states which
clinched prohibition repeal yesterday.

, BUFFALO, N. Y., (UP) Some 30
million gallons of wines and oham
pagnes, some 33 years old, are ready
for distribution by the fineries of
central and western New York.
In the Finger Lakes region, where
more than two-score wineries have
been operating in anticipation of
repeal. It Is estimated that 17 mil
lion gallons are ready.
Approximately a million bottles of
champagne are available in the dis
trict. In the heyday of Its prosperity
the United States consumed about
two million bottles of American madeJ
champagne annually. Of this amount
three-fourths was made In the Finger
Lakes area.
Although they said It was almost
Impossible to predict prices, winery
operators believe the price will not
be out of the reach of the average
pocketbook.
One winery head, who asked that
his name be withheld, said he be
lieved the retail price of a quart of
wine would not be more than 1.50.
' Good champagnes probably will be
available at between $3.50 and 5 a
quart.
It Is estimated that the average
age of the wine, which will be avail
able from toe New York wineries,
will be well over four years.
Upwards of 350.000 gallons of wine
from the Chautauqua -Erie grape belt
will be available. Only four wineries
In the district, the nation's largest
producing area for the American
type grape, are operating.
Port, sherry and claret are the most
important varieties made In the belt.
The Chautauqua and Erie Grape
Orowers association expects to press
150,000 gallons of wine this season,
and if its plans are realized, the total
amount of wine available from the
district would reach the 500.000 gal
lon mark.
In the Ham ell district, six big
wineries, whose products were fam
ous before prohibition, have reopened.

Reports of five election day killings
, in Floyd end Knott counties were
received here today, bringing to 15
the number of such killings In Ken
tucky. Two men were slain, another prob
ably fatally c tabbed and three others
were wounded slightly In Floyd
county.
Arthur Thompson, who was shot
here Tuesday, died today In a Martin
hospital. Dennis frspeara. 18, also died
In the Martin hospital. -
Stabbed In the lung, Frank Bur
dhett, 33, was believed fatally wound
ed in a Floyd county fight blamed
by officers on a drinking bout.
Reports from Hlndman said Bal
lard and Orvllle Hall, cousins, and a
man named Mulllns were shot to
death In Knott county Tuesday In
a fight.
