TEACHERS SALARY
.County Superintendent Bow
. man Points Out Inequali
ties Faithful Service
Is Outstanding Feature
In Jackson county thera are Ap
proximately 300 teachers and acboot
administrators working with approx
imately 8.000 school children. These
men and women will work for a term
of months which will average less
this nine during the present school
year. There are 73 school districts
tn Jackson county, 83 of which oper
ata their own schools. The other 10
do not operate -a school in the dis
trict, but transport their pupils to
ether districts. In the 83 districts
that operate there are 70 buildings,
tnesnlng that tnere sre approximately
76 Janitors employed In the county,
who together with some 35 bus dm.
wrs, make up the salaried personnel
SAiat It takes to operate our schools.
Where Tax Goes.
Out of every dollar paid by the tax
payer of Jackson county, spproxl
mately 60 cents is used for the main-
tenance of public education, which la
not at all a new condition. The pro
portionate amount of the tax dollar
whloh goes to education has not made
any alarming Increases in recent
years In proportion to the burdens
that have been carried by the public
school system.
6alarles of teachers constitute
major portion of the money apent
for education. At this particular time
alary adjustments have been so er
ratic; and teachers' contracts havo
fceen supplemented with so many
promises that it Is Impossible to get
sin accurate picture of Just what aal
ary averages will be for the present
school year. It Is safe to say, how-
rer, that they will be the lowest
paid In Jackson county for a number
of years.
Mnst Eat In Vacations.
It Is well to remember that no way
lias yet been discovered by which
teacher can eliminate the expense of
living for from two to four months
each yesr, which makes it aseoiutciy
necessary to look st teachers' sslarles
with the right sttttude. A teacher
drawing tloo per month for nine
months earns $75 per month for 13
months, and a teacher drawing 575
per month for nine months earns a
little less than 13 per week for 53
weeks. During the time that teach
ers are supposed to be on vacation
they are expected to attend summer
school or to do some line of pro
fessional reading In order to be legal
ly qualified to teach the suoceedlng
ear. They sre open for only short
jobs of employment which, ss a rule,
pay the lowest wages. ,
For this salary the law says ttisV
hey shall have met before being li
censed to teach, nertaln scholsstlo re
quirements. They shall be able to
present to their school board a cer
tlflcste showing tnat they are In good
tiealth. The law further states thtt
they may not only be removed for
Incompetency or Immorellty, but may
kave their license to teach revoked,
teachers must meet these require
ments, yet this year one out of every
four, according to department of In
terior statistics, will be teaching Is
the United States for less salary than
the blanket code minimum for un
skilled labor yields on an annual
basis.
The equipment of Die modern
teacher Includes a knowledge of meth
ods and techniques unknown a few
years ago. Such tools as a msntsl
test, the achievement test, the aptl
tuds test, the pre -school test are
among the powerful modern weapons
the teaoher of today must use in

The NRA to date haa left the Amer
ican teacher In the position of the
Forgotten Man. No coae governs his
salary. He meets the qualifications
set by law for hla profession. He
takes the salary offered by the school
board under whom he works. He
takes the warrant offered by the clerk
of the school board for hla salary,
He takes the discount offered by the
scalper for his warrant. He pays bis
bills, and to date we have not heard
of any teacher strikes outside of trie
city of Chicago, where teachers asked
only for the wage, they had already
earned. In spite of this, we believe
there la no other class of people who
serve more faithfully and who can
more truthfully say "We Do Oust
