SALES TAX IS
10 PROPER!)
BIGHAM CAN TESTIFY
What the sties tnx mean for the
small property owner In California
has been brought home to one well
known Medrord resident, who hap
pen to own property In Stockton,
Cal.
This man is P. C. Blgham. who waa
showing his tax receipts to friends
today. Thanks to the revenue from
the sales tax, the tax on Bigham'a
small holding this year Is $6.07,
whereas the average for the three
years previous was til. In 1931 the
tax waa $10.97. This 1 a tax reduc
tion of over 40 per cent.
According to the general report,
this la a typical example for Cali
fornia and the small property owner.
A few days ago a resident of San
Bernardino visited Medford and also
showed friends his tax receipts for
this year on hi home there had
been a reduction of 42 per cent.
Small wonder, declare believers in
this form of taxation, that the tax
payer of that state are enthusiastic
over the sales tax. It is relieving
the tax burden, and only taxing peo
ple In proportion to their expendi
tures, as well as taxing many people
of means who b not owning prop
erty have hitherto paid no taxes at

Waterfront Story
Screen actors have found them
selves In many strange situations
during the xilmtnft of pictures In
Hollywood's history, but no assign
ment ever was so bizarre as the ex

Studio theater.
They were paid to be modern Jon
ahs only Instead of whales, they had
to live Inside huge sharks.
This fantastic situation, whloh in
reality Is not as fantastic as It sounds,
according to authorities who for yeara
have been combatting the smuggling
of Chinese Into California, was neces
sary to fit the story action In the
picture based on Max Miller's best
wiling book, "I Cover the Water
front." Ben Lyon, playing opposite Claud

porter who aids federal men In run
ning down a gang of pseudo-fishermen,
headed by Ernest Torrence.
whose real racket Is smuggling Chi
nese Into the United States. After
landing hordes of the undesirable
aliens under the very noses of tne
authorities, the mystery finally is
solved. The Chinese are Inside sharks
