CHEST
There is something in the very core of man
, . . a pride . . . humility . . . distaste for
groveling and begging . . . which keeps the
truly deserving from seeking street-corner
alms. Yet they wistfully welcome that
charity which is the result of organized,
fraternal effort. They can and will reach
to the coffers of a Community Chest and
when they do, we must not let a few jing
ling coins be our sorry answer. Let us say
NO to the panhandler's tin cup . . . take the
few pennies we might give heedlessly day
by day, to what may be no more than a
racket and let us give the total of those
pennies for the year to our own Commu
nity Chest. Then we shall not refuse our
needy. They shall not go unaided . . . turn
to strangers for what is their due in this
their city and ours. When jobs are available
these worthy will be first to seek them,
for it is not in their hearts or minds to be
parasites. Your little may be some man's
all, and since we are all neighbors ... all
brothers in His eyes ... no one among us
can refuse this pledge ... "I WANT TO
GIVE all I can to. our Community Chest,
that our city may be freed of suffering hu
manity, and made a worthwhile place in
which all may live."
