The coast railroad, now promising
to extend to the sea from the Oranta
Pass route, was promoted and de
veloped by Dr. neddy. The Grants
Pass section of the road was built
by him and his associates. To him
a portion of the Roosevelt highway
also owes It beginning and he built
a section of the Alturas road Into
Susanvlll,, Oal. With Colonel Frank
H. Kay he was Identified In the early
daye with all effort aimed to bring
Industry to the Rogue River valley.
The Nash hotel, the center of
southern Oregon social life during
the colorful boom days, was owned
and operated by Dr. Reddy, and vis
ited by some of the nation's most
wealthy and distinguished people,
many of whom purchased extensive
orchard holdings.
Friend of Patton
With the operation of the Nash
hotel, his local connections with
Owney Patton, a lifelong friend, be
gan. Mr. Patton was brought from
Spokane, Wash., to run Vie hotel.
The two had been friend In the
northern city, where Dr. Reddy had
practiced medicine and where he was
at one time chief of police. The
Patton-Reddy friendship, however,
began back in Mayo county, Ireland,
before Dr. Reddy wa born. Owney
Patton -recalled today. The two fam
ilies started from Liverpool tc
America, both headed for Cleveland,
Ohio, where Dr. Reddy was bom De
cember 3. 1807. The -Reddys came
on the steamer, which was first to
sail out of the harbor. The Pattons
earns pn a windjammer and the
winds were favorable. The Pattons
were first to reach Castle Garden.
Both families settled In Cleveland.
Ohio, and remained friends through
the many sections of the nstlon that
they traveled.
Mining Fascinated
' In Spokane, Wash., Dr. Reddy was
married m 1697 to Mary r. Cowley,
who survives him. He had come first
to Seattle, where he had lost all he
had In a fire. In Spokane he was
associated with the practice of medl
' cine with Dr. Stockton. Mining, at
all times fascinating to him, how
ever, weaned him away from the
medical profession and be there en
tered that field, which elalmed bis
Interest until his death,
He was president of the Southern
Oregon-Northern California Mining
association, and during the world
war he mined chrome for the gov
ernment In Siskiyou county, Califor
nia. Dr. Reddy was also a member of
the Elk' lodge, the Knlghte of Col
umbus and of the Sacred Heart
Oathollo church. He leaves, besides
his widow, a brother, Owen P. Reddy,
of Eugene, Ore., and Via following
son and daughters; Paul Reddy,
Hollywood, Cel.; Mrs. Walter Brown,
Tahiti; Dorothea Reddy, San Fran
elsoo; John P. Reddy, student at
Oonnga; Agatha, Mary Elizabeth and
Michael ot.Medford. He also has
two nieces In Medtord: Mrs. Everett
Brayton and Mrs. James Murray. An
other nleoe, Genevieve Reddy, of
Cleveland, Is now visiting In this
city.
A brother, Martin J, Reddy, for
mer well known local Jeweler, pre
eeded him In death, as did a sister,
Mrs. Mamie DeLln, also a former
resident here.
Funeral aervtoes, which will be di
rected by the Perl Funeral Parlors,
will be announced later,

SALEM. Not. 8. (AP) The state
board of control today authorized ex
penditure of $30,000 for the purchase
of the Camp-Clatsop site of 363 acres
and an additional 100 acres to be
used for the federal government In
continuing permenent Improvements
for the Oregon national guard in
clatsop county.
The lotion, based on a 1833 legis
lative aot specifying that sum be ap
propriated when possible by the board
followed the appearance of State Sen.,
ator Prank yranclscovloh of Astoria
and members of the Clatsop county
court.
The delegation pointed out the
state now was paying 93330 a year
rental for the leaned property, and
that the federal government had ap
propriated $43,300 additional for per
manent Improvements If the state
assure definite plans to purchase the
site. I
WINSTON-SALEM, N. C, Nov. S.
(AP) John Lanier, 35 of Winston-
Salem was arrested there today and
charged by police with plotting to
kidnap Mrs. Hlchard J. Reynolds, wife
of the millionaire tobacco magnate.
Lanier was arrested when he celled
for a package supposedly containing
money planted In accordance with
the instructions forwarded Mrs. Rey
nolds at the time of the threat.

Capt. James 0. Shaw, 80, who saw
long service In the civil war and
carried to his death a Confederate
bullet that lodged In his shoulder

Albert Buch, director of the cham
ber of commerce, ha accepted the
responsibility of organizing a mining
committee for the local chamber, It
was announced today, following a
meeting of the board of directors.
Personnel of the committee and the
program to be adopted In the future
was not annduhced by Mr. Burch,
but It la his Intention to sppolnt the
committee within a day or so.
It is the opinion of chamber direc
tors that a mining committee can do
very effective work both in Interest
ing capital In propertlea here and In
Investigating proposed operations and
lte future activities will be watched
with Interest.

THREE PLEAD GUILTY
TO ROBBERY CHARGES
LA GRANDE, Ore., Nov. S. (AP)
Jesse B. Paul, escaped Oklahoma con
vict: James Dushane, former Inmate
of a Texas prison, and Glenn. Slmms
of Uklah, Ore., this morning entered
plena of guilty In circuit court at
Enterprise to charges of assault and
robbery being armed with a danger
ous weapon. Judge J. W. Knowlea
sentenced Paul and Dushane to life
terms In the penitentiary and gave
Slmms ten years.
PORTLAND. Not. 3. (AP) Donald
Long was elected president o' the
Jackson club at the annual meeting
of the Democratic organisation here
last night. Mrs. J. E. Freights was
elected vice president.
Other new officers are Willis Ma-
honey, mayor of Klsjruith Falls, sec
ond vice president; Ben Flaxel, dis
trict attorney of Coos county, third
vice president; Miss Oladys Everett,
fourth vice president; Mrs. John
Buckley, secretary, and Ellis Barnes,
treasurer.

for harmonious cooperation, and
condemnation of what he described
as "defestlst tactics," characterized

dent or the state board of higher
education, who visited Qhe campuses
of University of Oregon and Oregon
State college.
Tn an address before faculty mem
bers and students at Bugene, Mr.
Nelson criticized such persons as
have, he said, been subtely sabot
aging the efforts of Chancellor W. J.
Kerr. "Dr. Kerr la sincere." the
chairman declared. "He if not out
to harm the university as some
woulfi have us believe."
He warned tne dissension must be
overcome for "already people have I
been heard discussing tthe great sav-
kng which would be, effected were1
both the university 'and college1 to
bo closed for several yesrs."
At the Corvauls campus later.
Chairman Nelson declared that
"wholesome, healthful and generous
rivalries are good, but there la
no place for sabotage directed against
any individual or any institution."
He observed that "there Is no com
petition between lighthouses," quot
ing one of the educators of his own
alma mater, the Xinlverslty of Virginia-Nelson
declared there must be no
false and Injurious rivalry between
the State college and the university.

today in a serious condition. He has
been In poor health for some months.
Last Saturday night, while crossing
the street, he was struck by an auto,
and not seriously Injured. He was
striken last Monday, and has been in

tors were reported In attendance.
Barneburg, a forme county commis
sioner resigned last January, on ac
count of his health.
